Postby Grayson » Fri Sep 21, 2012 10:20 am

With northerens will they have solid banding on their back or can it be broken bands ? I will post pics later when I get home of him I know he is northern but I dont think he is pure because of the broken bands but has the orange on the side and the salt and pepper tail colors he also has some black on the side like orange blotch and then some black blotch then orange Amd the black by his eye like eye black

Northerns often have broken bands, the description you give sounds like a Northern.

Usually anything mixed with an IJ will look mostly like an IJ (makes it hard to tell pure IJs). A northern could possibly be mixed with an Eastern without big differences, but Easterns are rare in the USA so not really worth worrying about. Any other mix would likely be very obvious.

Pictures are the way to get a real ID.

northerns have the most mass, merauke's are the longest but usually more slender.

Eco earth is fine, but can be very dusty if it gets dry.

Egg shells are fine, though I do crush mine up before I add them to food. They're a great source of calcium.

Yup. The yellow orange can range from extremely pale yellow to an almost neon colour to red-orange that looks like it's on fire. The size of the dark areas also varies a lot, as does the amount of speckling. There's no one thing that's better looking, everyone has different things they love. I'm often getting compliments on my very bold coloured Northerns (lots of dark and very rich orange/yellow/red sides) but I'm completely smitten by my new very light coloured babies I traded Pink T. Monkey for. The variety is awesome :D
