mites

Postby Renee » Tue Aug 14, 2012 8:21 am

so my little mite problem that i thought was taken care of ended up being a big mite problem. I redid his cage with paper towel and cleaned all his toys and things. He keeps going after himself even though i see no bugs on him he scratched up his hind leg and i cleaned it up with child safe antiseptic. what really concerned me is he just went to scratch his ear and let out a yelp. what else can i do for him? does he need to go to the vet? please help.

You need to use a mite-killing solution. Either reptile-specific (Reptile Relief, provent-a-mite) or human/household treatments (Nix, no-pest strips). You need to treat the skink, the tank, the decorations, and the surrounding area. And you'll need to do it multiple times over 2 months to kill every mite and all the eggs.

If you want more details on any of the listed treatments, let me know. A vet can also help, but mites can be treated without vet help. You just need to get it done, because mites can kill reptiles.

I agree with Mel. Also do a search on the forum and you will find alot of information regarding mite treatment. To help ease the discomfort, I would soak him in a Betadine and water solution.

They're right, mites can be a big problem especially if you don't catch it quickly. I'm sorry your little guy is getting nibbled on! D=

My leopard geckos had that problem awhile back due to pet stores accidentally packaging the crickets with the mites. It was horrible. Keep us updated on him!

I have the reptile relief spray and i sprayed the tank and wiped him down with it and i washed his hides and toys in hot water and baked his driftwood in the oven. does he need to be on the paper towel for the 2 months or can he be on shavings and i just treat the cage every so often for 2 months? Hes getting used to the idea of the paper towel and the shoe box house.
