Hey guys, can i use paper towel for Substarate??

if i got aspen shaving where would i get it ? i have no clue

Yes, you can definitely use non-printed paper towels as substrate. I've done it lots of times, and it works very well. You can even rip up some sheets of it and pile it up so your skink can burrow in it. I've heard of it being used when your skink needs to be in a cleaner environment than Aspen shavings, etc. can give, e.g. when your skink is sick or injured. You can get Carefresh Aspen bedding at pet stores that sell small rodents and lizards. I got some from my friends that have a gerbil, and it said it was for lizards, too. Hope I could help! You can use paper towel, but the ability to burrow in the cage makes the skinks much more comfortable. They basically ALWAYS want to burrow, so I highly recommend aspen shavings. You can buy them at a local pet store or online. I use aspen for my skink and put 3-4 inches so he can burrow, which he always does. It makes them feel safe and comfortable.

As for how to FIND aspen shavings, I could not find shavings labeled for reptiles ANYWHERE. Then I realized the aspen I am using on my mouse is in fact shaved aspen! So check under 'small animal' and rodent beddings.

they just hide under the paper,blueys arent burrowers per say,but they do like secure hiding places,eg burrowing into loose substrate,if they have hides they may use them,but they like a small hide that fits snuggly,makes them more secure,most hides we supply dont offer that so substrate is used instead,be it aspen,cypress mulch,newspaper ect

if u use paper towel,add rocks ect to help keep nails trim,otherwise nails grow to long and need trimming

hmm i was just thinking. i have no idea where to buy it... i don't believe any pet stores sell aspen shavings besides i think PETBARN in Australia, but the thing is it's like $60 a bag so much money , and how long does aspen shavings last?

doens't it get dusty and get into the BTS system? causing respiratory disease or something?

its very pricey here,theres similar substrates available alot cheaper,pet stores generally up price to make a profit quite alot higher than reccomended retail price

perhaps some aussies will share what they use,ive not used any shavings my self

closest ive used was sugar cane mulch from bunnings,it worked well but has a smell to it,so probably not the best in your house if housed indoors

what do you use Richard for your substrate??

i've actually done a great job looking at my bearded dragon, so basicall;y i'm just gonna get like a 120cm length glass tank, and put paper towel down as substrate for the BTS, and buy him lots off hiding things and stuff, aspen shaving where i live cost so much money, so i'm just gonna use paper towel, it's easier to look after, does look nice, and! easy to clean, and finally, i don't have to worry about impaction and killing and stuff.. and! the paper towel not dusty because i put them back in the packaging so it's really good and when he does a poo, the paper towel is extra absorbent, so nothing falls underneath!

i use sand,washed play sand for some,red brickies sand for others,fake grass for some others and newspaper for quite a few as well,i like carpet and paper,easy to tell when it needs replacing,very easy to replace to,with arid animals they dry out fast to when water is spilt,i try and add flat rockss ect for climbing and basking on,helps to wear claws and gives some purchase,though the move fine on even newspaper,other plus is it gives roughage to aid shedding and helps half hold paper in place,i group keep a few species so replacement is often frequent

you can prabaly use paper towel as substrate but i like to use newspaper cause i think it gives them something to look at in the day
like i like to get the comics and put that in there cage cause my skinks seems to enjoy at looking at the comics
