lychee fruit?

Postby kripp_keeper » Wed Jun 27, 2012 8:24 pm

I found these a co-op, 7 of them cost me 79 cent. I love trying things Safeway and Co-op bring in. Sometimes they have some odd looking fruits and melons.

Anyways, I cut a few small slices of the actual fruit, and gave some to my BTS. Both of them really seemed to like them, and stayed out standing up waiting for more after i closed their terrariums. Now I'm not really sure if they would be bad to feed in large amounts, but they do contain a large amount of vitamin C. I know I have read not to feed citrus fruit, but I have never really looked into why . While these are not a citrus fruit, is the reason not to feed citrus fruit because of the acidity or the vit c? I really like to give them a large of a variety as possible, and I'm wondering if these are okay for treats. at roughly 11 cents each they aren't badly prices, and they don't taste to bad either.

EDIT- Meant to post this link lol http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lychee

I think you should be ok with them as treats, and the caution with too much citrus like oranges etc is because of the acidity levels. Tomatoes also fall into this category. Vitamin c overdose? I dont really know but I would imagine you would have to feed your skink a crazy amount for that to happen. I have never eaten lychee fruit, whats it like?

They don't seem to be acidic to me. The taste is a bit hard to describe, kinda like a grape maybe :noknow:. I'm definitely gonna go buy some more at least for me to eat  They have a pretty strong smell, like sweet flowers.

It'll be fine for him :] I wouldn't feed it ALL the time, but feeding it as treats is okay. (I'm not sure how much would be TOO often, the vitamin c is good but im not exactly sure of the nutritional contents of them) Lychees are quite interesting looking/textured/tasting fruits lol.

I haven't thought of feeding lychees to the blueys but our parrot certainly likes them.

We buy them for her when they are in season and cheaper because there is not a lot of edible flesh once the husk and huge seed are removed. Another similar fruit is the mangosteen but its yield is also low with only the centre edible.

However she enjoys them.

The price of berries around here is pretty high, and most of the time they go bad in a day, 2 max. I find it hard at times to really keep a variety in their diet, and not end up buying the same 3-4 things out of habit. So seeing odds things like these in places I've never seen them remind me to try and give them different treats when I can.

U-Pick season is nearly here for Alberta... it'll be better in another month. But I do find our produce (fruit especially) to be lower quality, pricy, and limited. :(

I've fed lychee, definitely fine as a treat. I usually don't worry much about feeding fruit unless I have it on hand anyway, but its always nice to mix it up!

I love lychee fruits. its not very allergen and is quite sweet and not too watery.

thanks to its amazing ability to let me eat it without getting allergic to it, my skink Litchie is named after the fruit, and he loves eating it too whenever i give him a piece. definitely fine as a treat, but far too sweet for regular feed.

the lychee fruit has several "relative" fruits in asia, such as the rambutan (looks hairier and waxy). i think they would be just as safe to feed.
