BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

this vid is only a few days old and has some decent info on bts. thought it was cool since prehistoric pets rarely gives any spotlight to the blue tongues...

It's been up for a while on the reptiles magazine website. I personally don't like prehistoric pets.

One thing that strook me in that video was the part where he said BTS were nocturnal and hide in bushes all day. Also, at the end of the video where it highlights pinkies as good protein, I fear this might give the impression to some that pinkies are a regular part of their diet. However, that being said, I think the rest of the video was about right.

I really dislike prehistoric pets, mainly because they mass produce reticulated pythons, which there are already too many in the market and that are being killed/released/rehomed/rescued etc.

Their facts on anything other then retics I ignore. They are just another pet shop. Guess I'm also avoiding reptiles magazine if they are willing to have misleading/false info on species.

I'm glad you did because they did not have accurate information at all. After I recognized your name in the comments, I was like "YES! chalk one up for the good guys!"

I also really dont think heatmats should be used at all with BTS. Also dislike how he purely uses coloured bulbs so there is minimal light. Although I use a ceramic, I still offer a UVB tube.

While I am not necessarily disagreeing with anyone who has posted on this thread already, I just want to point out that in my opinion there are usually multiple ways to provide for the needs of any animal. I think it's great to discuss different opinions and explain why we think one option is better than others, but I also hate it when we start to get too judgemental about anyone who does things differently.

I have visited Prehistoric Reptiles, and while I would not do things exactly the way they do, I did not feel that they are doing a horrible job of caring for their animals based on what I saw. I do think it's crazy that they charge a ridiculous fee just to look at the majority of their animals, but that's their choice, and I don't have to pay it if I don't want to.

Again, I hope it doesn't sound like I am criticizing anyone who has posted previously. That is not my intent. I just don't want bluetongueskinks.org to become one of those sites that is viewed as intolerant of anyone who doesn't follow "our methods" exactly

That is a good point Jeff, but I made sure to only point out the GLARING errors...like BTS are nocturnal, heat rocks are good, (they are dangerous, I dont think anyone will disagree with me on that one...), that UVB isnt necessary (although i said it sure cant hurt if done properly), etc. I made sure i was not sounding snobbish, just correcting the obvious erroneous "facts" that they provided. Like the cool end of the cage being 65*F, etc etc. I even gave them props for mentioning that calcium supplements are indeed helpful and important.

I have no problem with any of that Saphire. My post was not directed at anyone, just an attempt to discourage a "gang mentality" type of piling on that happens a lot of places. I want this site to be better than that.

Nothing wrong with a cool end temp of 65,even for tropical species,to me it gives them choices,in the wild they can escape the heat if they desire,its alot better than a hot cool end temp as they have alot more options to control body temps and escape the heat if they wish

I agree with jeff,theres tons of ways of doing things,what works at one place may not at another,just because u dont agree u cant rule out what works for others,some use uv some dont, both can have excellent results, both can also have bad results if diets poxy or many other reasons,i could go on and on,but end of the day theres lots of ways to do things
