Sigh - Lizzie's sick again

Postby Rachael t » Mon May 14, 2012 4:06 am

Poor Lizzie's respiratory problems are returning again... Poor girl, her eye is all watery and closed up again. It's getting into winter so I hope she makes it through ok... I haven't had her in winter before. Wish her your best

What actions did you take the first time she became sick? Treatments and such? Thats too bad but I hear they can return easier once they have them so hopefully you reconized the signs quick enough that treatment can start asap.

this time of year can be hardest on easterns, respitory infection wise, from now until weather consistantly gets warm is the danger zone, has she seen a reptile vet,if shesconstantly having issues, she may need meds to try and over come it fully, otherwise try upping her temps to keep her warm

She is a rescued lizard so was initially very sick before I got her. She was surrendered because the past owners didn't know what to do. She has been to the vet loads, no reptile vet here but the one vet has been on her case the whole time. She has had her third lot of medication a few months ago and we think that no matter what she will never be totally healthy.

what meds were prescribed? and how long was the course of meds given,if the infections bad enough, might need back up treatments to help get fully over the ailment, they usually respond well to treatment if conditions causing the illness tobegin with are dealt with to

Well thats just the problem, I don't know what caused it to begin with. Se has been on Batryl and an antibiotic paste, can't remember the name. I'm going to see if she can go on another course of Batryl because it worked really well. Will keep you posted. Thanks for the advice. I'm trying to keep her as warm as possible and have set up her indoor enclosure for over winter. It's the sudden cold snap that has caused it. The vet thinks that her entire respiratory system is scarred from severe infections in the past and will always will prone to things like this. The weather directly affects her health too.

Give her plenty of vitamin A. Thats what we were told.

I found this not sure if it works or not but it seems like it's worth a shot:

Was the paste called 'Vibravet' aka Doxycycline? That's a broad-spectrum anti-biotic often used for resp. infections in rats. I don't have any advice since I'm a complete newbie when it comes to reptiles, but I've had way too much experience with ratss and chronic resp. infections. I hope she pulls through again. It sucks what scarring can do to lungs.

Ves that was the paste. She has now got another three weeks dosage of Baytril. She is nice and warm and settling into her indoor enclosure while the cold weather is here. She will still get regular sunshine as well :) I think she will be fine, this is going to be an ongoing issue for Lizzy.

yeah could be scarring, from suffering with it for so long, hopefully itisnt though and it might eventually clear up,being in qld, temps would be ok to pop her out for some sun in milder weather,a luxury we miss down here in melb, lol, but keeping her warm indoors will do her wonders ,she sounds like shes in good hands now to,with you,and the vet seems to have the right know how with meds as well,so thats a plus to,with warmth inside, she should be fine over winter

keep us posted on how she does

glad she is doing better! Some animals do have reoccuring RI's when the weather changes, which sucks, but at least you know what to do now :)
