BLUE TONGUE SKINKS

What do you do if your bitten and your blue tongue doesn't let go. I just want to be prepared in case this happens.

Wait it out. Eventually they will have to let go. I don't like to try to pull my finger out of an animal's mouth because it usually hurts them more.

Wait it out like Coomassie says. After I was bitten by Marcie awhile ago she bites and the more you move the more pressure she applys and longer she holds on. If I don't move it's over in a matter of seconds. But with steve it's over in a matter of milliseconds. So each skink is different.

There are other methods to try, like offering something yummier to bite instead, getting someone else to gently pry open the mouth, or putting the skink under running water. But generally if you stay very still they get bored and let go on their own.

ive only had one ever latch on,most just chomp and let go,i had a new born blotch latch on to my little finger when i was young,lil tyke just bit harder when we tried to get it off,tried running water,tried dunking under water,tried a gentle head squeeze with a helper to open its mouth,just made it clamp tighter,was like it had lock jaw,lol,worst bite ive ever copped,what was more embarassing was it was the runt of the litter,tiny little thing from a litter of 8,in the end just sat at the table and had it on the table and left it be and then it let go

flailing around ect just scares them,makes them hang on longer,so if u stay calm and just sit it down it should relax its bite and go about its business,ive had alot of bites,most just nip,like a warning bite,thats the only one thats actually hung on,lol

I've had a lot of success (she's a moody girl) with putting something, such as egg or a drop of water, on the tip of her nose.

Often, the urge to clean overrides the urge to chomp... : )

If bitten, your first instinct will probably be to pull away. Depending on the bite they may just let go immediately, but if not do not pull your hand out. This will make a worse wound and could make them bite harder or hurt them. I'd try like the person above said and put a drop of water on the nose. Or pushing your hand towards the animal will push their neck and head back making them release. This I haven't really tried with a skink, so it's only a suggestion, but I do know that it works with parrots like when bitten by a macaw who won't let go and can easily crush your finger.

unfortunatly when i was young...lets just say im no stranger to the bites u are describing!! haha first advice is dont move your finger dont move it at all!! the more u move the tighter the vice gets!! its amazing how much force those little guys can have! (especially shinglebacks but thats for another story! :S) anyway after painfull failing attemempts i found tapping the tail to be 80% productive in dis attatching a cranky bluey i say 80% cause there has been an instance or 2 where it infact had the same effect as moving my finger.... best thing i can advise is to avoid a bite in genral they give plenty of warning i always blame myself if i ever get bitten

with snakes or tokay geckos esp...mouthwash or anything with alcohol makes them let go pretty darn quick. Obviously use like, a drop, maybe, because someone had a tokay that would JUST. NOT. LET. GO, and they ended up with a drunk tokay!
I've only been bit by blueys twice, and each time it was easy to get them off, and it wasnt like they were intent on latching on, just to immobilize the "threat".
