Are all snails the same?

Postby skeetersmom » Tue Apr 17, 2012 9:16 pm

For the most part - are all snails the same? I don't have garden snails in my yard - nor do any of my friends (which dosen't surprise me - I live in Wisconsin).

I went to my local pet shop - and they have fresh water Mystic snails - kinda small, but I want Skeeter to experience all foods that he can (and like the idea that he gets calicum with the shells).

I can get the can-o-snails (which I have been feeding) but would like to give him snails in the shell from time to time (they are a bit expensive - but hey, he is my baby).

Just want to make sure these fresh water snails don't potentially carry something I wouldn't want Skeeter to be exposed to.

another part I forgot - what is the smallest snail in shell that should be fed? Am I overthinking that perhaps if they are too small, a skink may choak on it?

they generally spit most of the shell out, well the garden snails over here anyways, theres a small white snail down on the coast, bit smaller than a normal sized marble, they have a thin thin shell and some of that gets eaten if they eat that, but still generaly they try spitting that out,i guess in some cases a bit might be eaten, main thing is any snail they can crush its shell will generally be consumed, even tiny ones, they will still chomp them first

If it's a small snail, ie; very young snail, all of mine will eat the shell. With the more mature snails, they crush the shells, get out the nice meaty part and leave the shell.

You should be able to find some forest snails soon if its warm enough. We have them here but have to go into the woods to find them, they don't live in gardens or around houses. http://bioweb.uwlax.edu/bio210/2011/allsop_dani/

Finding empty crushed shells of garden snails is one of the best indicators you have wild blueys in your yard. :ohyes:

AHHHH - to live in Australia where these creatures roam free -yet another reason for Australia being on my "places to go before I die" list
