Dog Food Ingrediants ?

So I've been looking, but haven't found info here as to what ingrediants to look/watch out for when choosing a canned dog food to feed my BTS
Can anyone direct me to, or give me some info on this please?

You're probably going to get a million different answers to this but in all honesty- it really doesn't matter. Some people swear by the all-organic stuff, personally I like to look for things that have a fair amount of veggies already in them, and many breeders have used Alpo/Pedigree for decades with great results.

The main thing thats agreed upon is that catfood is ok for babies, but should not be fed regularly to adults due to the high taurine levels.

Also when looking at the ingredients one simple thing that is important is looking at the first few ingredients (esp the first). If they are a whole meat (ie chicken, beef) that is what you are looking for. NOT things like "whatevermeat" pulp, broth, meal, etc. This shows lower quality and more fillers.

they sell dog food that has whatevermeat pulp listed as an ingrediant?

must be different over there,in australia,even the low quality no name brands say chicken,beef ect ect

the better quality ones usually have a good mix of ingrediants

In the past when I have researched dog foods, I always read that meat (beef, lamb, chicken, etc) meal is better than whole meats. When a food lists a whole meat as the first ingredient (so it says "Chicken") and then a bunch of non protein ingredients (grains, veggies, etc), the meat portion does NOT actually make up the majority of that food. This is because they put ingredients in order by weight. When they list the whole meat in the ingredients, this is prior to the actual processing of the food. So since the weight of the meat can be up to 80% water weight, after cooking, the weight of the meat will be MUCH less. So when they use a meat meal (not by product meals), this has already had the water content removed from the meat. So this is giving you a highly concentrated protein source. So when a meat meal is the first ingredient you can almost guarantee that the majority of that food is made up of a meat product, not grains or veggies.

Can someone tell me something that I am missing? I am wondering because there have been several times that people on this forum have recommended looking for foods with out the meat meal and looking for whole meat products.

excellent point brad,similar when folk say they use the left overs of whats used for human consuption,offal,bone,cartlidge ect,alot of that is actually quite good,and adds variety,and more to the point is only a small percentage of the overall contents

theres alot more in this food than the meat,being made up for an omnivores diet,usually has a quite decent range of veg and plant roughage in it to,not to mention vitamins and minerals

I've used Wellness (both cat and dog) with great success, and am currently using Pedigree with beef. (bigger cans, cheaper price). Also having great success with that.
