forgot i had these,actually witnessed them being born,excuse the messy cage,9 stumpys lived in there at the time and its like feed one day,clean the next

first pic is an asper female that the male used to also mate,but never had babies,she used to do the heavy breathing,but possably had slugs,i got her as a new born,she was 13 there and out grew my line in her 2nd year

These are amazing!! That first one is so speckly, I love that look. That is gorgeous.

Love the baby shots too, what huge heads they have when born. I really hope I have the good fortune of having shinglebacks someday.

there all rugosa aspera (eastern shinglebacks)not sure of locales,the dark ones i mostly have are a smaller form,probably victorian,the speckled one is a larger form,not sure where from

Speckles are quite common in the wheatbelt region of WA if my memory serves me correctly?

they are arent they,probably my favourite baby to find,i witnessed those 2 being born,bloody mum would push and lift but id get a butt photo,then push again bub pops out,missed oppatunity,lol,phones suck as cameras,i think i have a pic of one with just the head out somewhere,i forgot i even had these pics

another interesting thing i noticed as u can see in the pics,the mum nudged the babies around and watched them for a while,even between having them

Remarkable. The variety of colors and patterns between the four subspecies of shinglebacks really astounds me. Having only ever seen photos, and a few captive specimens, I can only imagine what pops up in the wild.

Those are great shots, Richard. It's amazing the babies eat their own placenta, especially since it's so large! I know at least some Egernia do that too. Do you ever see babies eat any droppings from the adults? I think I read somewhere some lizards do that to ingest bacteria to help break up their food; the babies aren't born with that bacterial flora to break up the plant material.

casey never seen babies eat adult poop,but always a possability i guess,i think prehensile tail skinks do,also all tiliqua and egernia skinks eat there placenta,sometimes with large litters already born babies even pinch others before they get a chance

I am very grateful that the babies eat their own placenta! It would be awful to have to clean that up, especially with dozens of babies. It is actually amazing what a good job they do of cleaning up the birthing mess. I'm sure they are not concerned about the mess themselves, but I sure appreciate their efforts.

I have never seen babies eat poop either, but when my females give birth they are on carpet substrate, and any poop is cleaned up daily so they really don't have the opportunity. Maybe I should leave some poop in there for them!

I know for a fact that baby green iguanas eat adult feces to build up the necessary gut flora to aid in the digestion of plant material.


... and to be completely gross, of course, because let's face it, that's disgusting.

seems common with plant eating species,might be possable also that its nutritous,undigested plant material still in it

Coprophagia in young skinks could be feasible. A large quantity of live beneficial micro flora is excreted in faeces and as reptiles are not suckled they don't receive colostrum to establish gut flora in the same manner as mammals.
