You can't have just one. After I got Cloud, I was SURE I wouldn't get any more skinks.

But then! I met this one blue tongue skink at my local reptile shop. The owner put him in my arms (purposely, he knows that is my weakness). He was so calm and just wanted to sit on my shoulder.

Apparently the previous owners had him in a cage with another BTS, and obviously they fought. He had only been fed live mice! I noticed he was missing two toes, and two more were being constricted by shed; one looked like it was getting ready to fall off. I got the shed off for him, came back a few times....
Ended up coming home with him.

He is such a good skink, cleans his plate every time, and he will never see another mouse again. The toe that looked like it was going to fall of surprisingly healed.

On another note, I can't tell if he's Merauke or Indo. Anyone know?

Your local pet store will take x family pets and resell them? That is kinda cool, considering the pet shop does a good job of caring for them before they get resold. Wouldn't trust any stores anywhere near me though. I always go in and feel really sorry for their animals. Usually being fed wrong and housed poorly.

Anyways you got a beautiful skink! While I don't know what kind it is (new to the skink game myself) I will say you were fortunate to find and rescue that one I hope to see more pics soon! Especially eating pics. Love to see blue tongues buried in the food they love.

Richard - Hahaha, you're right. They are just so easy to take of, it's way too hard not to adopt them all ;_;


Nenna - Aww, I hate that, if my reptile shop were doing it wrong I would be sure to bark at him about it. He does a pretty good job though. I would love to take pics of him eating, but he is a ghost when it comes to food. Doesn't like me to see him eat either. XD Unlike Cloud; he's a slow eater but doesn't care if I watch.

I'd say that you have a Merauke :3 I have one too! It's so sad how animals are treated in pet shops...I wish I could save so many, yet at the same time I never want to support any pet shops by purchasing animals from them except rodents.

Merauke you say? Awesome! I wanted one before I got my Northern. And I totally agree on not buying them from pet shops... you're just giving them reason to buy another animal to give improper care to.

Mice aren't bad? Seems...not so nutritious and fatty. I find it amazing that he only ate live mice and yet is so gentle and has never tried to bite me (yet, lol).

I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to leaving another animal in with a predator with no means of escape. ;_; I have 4 super worms that were supposed to be food, that were too cute, and are now basically pets. *sigh LOL* I could never own snakes. ._.

Said so casually We don't have any reptile shops here in Christchurch, the only BTS I've ever seen in NZ have been easterns and the only pick of reptiles we have are waterdragons, bearded dragons, Leopard gecko and eastern BTS. xD

But he is a real stunner! :] Totally jealous.

Hi fellow kiwi I'm lucky in that there is a reptile shop just 20 mins from where I live. We can also keep our own native geckos and skinks if we get a permit

Yea I don't really find it necessary since they are so fatty, but for an underweight animal it would definitely be good. Also does seem very good for a female who just gave birth to get a nice amount of calcium back in her too. I don't see myself ever feeding them to mine though, I just give a widely varied diet without them. Not like one here or there is bad if people want.

I know someone who feeds his on a mostly (FT) mouse diet. They seem to do well enough. However, when I babysat them they were somewhat clueless as to how to eat out of a food dish and would beg for mice by gaping their mouths when I opened the cage door(at first I thought it was a threat but I figured out you just stick the mice in their mouths and they would eat them). That all being said, it shouldn't be difficult to switch him over at all.
