BTS tail bases during the breeding season
Sexing BTS (in this case Northern BTS) during the breeding season is usually posible if you compare tail base as seen in these two photos.

Bill Schwinn, a merauke breeder, said that the base of his males tails enlarge during breeding season.

James - do you have some males that you just don't see this in? I have a couple that even when breeding I see no sort of bulge or enlargement (very possibly hidden by fat, they aren't overweight but they aren't skinny either).

Great photos!

Currently I have one other mature male, and his tail base is looking about the same as the other male. I have noticed this on nearly all of the breeding males I have had in the past.
