What kind of calcium supplement is best? And is it possible to handle him too much?
You need the surface temperature under the heat lamp to be 95-100 F or 35-38 C. So buy a good thermometer (we generally recommend the little temperature guns where you can point it at a surface and it will give you a digital reading), and then buy a dimmer and dim the heat lamp until you have the desired temperature. If he is moving away it is too hot. You need the heat lamp on one side and a cool end on the other side so he can chose what temperatures he wants. Hides on both the warm and cool side are best, again - so he can chose the temperature but still have the option to hide and be safe.
I'm not sure what calcium supplements are available in Australia, maybe some of the Australian members can help. If you aren't providing UVB lighting, then I'd look for one with calclium and vitamin D3.
For handling - make sure it isn't overly stressed and that it has a chance to regulate temperatures etc.
