Snails

Postby SFBlueTongue81 » Tue Feb 14, 2012 10:40 pm

I'm wondering if anyone has tried to farm raise some snails in their backyard and how it went? It sounds like snails are great to feed to BTS but hard to find ones still with the shell that are sold? The wild ones where I live should be easy to cultivate but I hear wild snails have parasites and they sound really scary!

After reading about snail parasites the info I found said they're mosty only harmful to other snails? although some seem to effect birds too.
I can find lots of garden snails here in Northern CA but I'm just concerned about the parasite issue and it's been hard to find info about it.
Am I being paranoid? What do you guys think?

with harvesting your own,id be me concerned if any household near by uses snail baits to kill snails,as feeding poisoned ones to a bluey can also poison them, but if u could keep the contained for a week or 2,i guess that helps,as if poisoned would be dead by then

Once I get the snail farm going I'll wait at least 3 weeks before feeding
I just can't find any info on how the parasites are spread if they can go from snail to snail or how risky the nasty parasites are? and if they can effect reptiles? I know if humans eat garden snails without cooking the snails there have been cases of the parasites getting into the brain and eating it away until people die.

If anyone has experience feeding garden snails, if you can let me know how that worked that would be great!
