Caught Milo in the act, but didn't have time to open the glas doors, so the picture is not the clearest, and the hemipenes are on their way back in, but it gives the general idea, if you don't know what you're looking for...
There was a sperm plug, and Milo kindly wiped the string that didn't come off with the poop on the edge of his water bowl.

Re: Hemis, plugs, and poop
wow, thanks for that picture and it's labeling. Good snag!
How soon (my skink 1 1/2 years) would you see this when they go to the bathroom? I think the care sheet said 1 year would be the earliest. . . ? My Skink doesn't have any 'parts' come out when it goes. I'm thinking it may be a girl. . . ?

Wow
talk about your detailed diagram! I can't imagine how you had a camera ready in time for that shot, I'm lucky to be in the right position to see it, much less film it. Great catch!

Re: Hemis, plugs, and poop
Scooter- I have seen the hemi-peni and sperm plugs on Thor, and he is almost 9 months old. You may have a female, seems as though you would have seen something by now if you have been looking?

Re: Hemis, plugs, and poop
I'd love to say I was talented somehow, but of course it was just pure luck that I happened to have the camera in hand
Took a couple of seconds to get it turned on and in position, that's why I only caught the hemi penes right as they were slipping back in...
As for how early you can see them; I don't think it's an age thing as much as it is an individual physical thing. I saw Joeys' right after I got him when he was about 8 moths old; I'm pretty sure Jazz is a boy, he is 15 months old and I've never seen anything. So, sexing by LACK of penes or pluggs: easy as always!
NOT!

Thanks, I'm pretty sure I've got a girl on my hands since I've been on the look out and it never looks anything like your photo.
Thank you again for the photo, very helpful.

I observed hemipenes on my guy at about 5 months. He dropped his first sperm plugs around 6-7.

Re: Hemis, plugs, and poop
Great informative thread, Susann!! Excellent pictures, thanks so much for sharing these!
Scooter - you won't see this all the time when going to the bathroom. You may well have a female, but absence of sperm plugs or not seeing any boy bits when going to the bathroom doesn't necessarily mean it is a girl. You won't always see their junk every time they go to the bathroom.
If you see any of this stuff, it is confirmed male. But not seeing anything doesn't necessarily = female. If you post top down pictures of the entire skink sitting as straight as you can get, we might be able to give a decent idea of sex visually.

That is some awesome pictures and descriptions. Very interesting for a "newbie". I'm watching, but think it's a girl. Will post pictures again.
