binky sick again

Postby half » Fri Jan 13, 2012 9:36 pm

binky is a bit offcolour today and she has vomited a couple of times ,we had a good look at her and she seems to have a rectum injury,We took her to a local vet as the duty massey vet was a cat/dog vet,she had a look at her and said she would give us some antibotics until we can get her to massey monday .she had never seen a bluey in her life. She has vomited a couple of times since she has come home and we are trying to keep her fluids up.she seems active enough now and attentive after the first antibiotic but we are not sure how much she retained before vomiting

As far as I know, vomiting in skinks in not a good sign(Please politely correct me if I am wrong!), and I highly recommend bringing your skink to an experienced reptile vet. If the vet has never seen a skink, she was relying on mammal experience and skinks are very different.

I hope you the best of luck!!

We went to Massey University small animal clinic today and Bink met Daniell again who is going to run some tests and maybe take an xray and a culture from her sore rectum and vomiting over the next day or so,as an inpatient. We are Binkless for the near future. She said she would keep us in the loop as treatment progressed. Its great for her to see a reptile vet again, after a crazy weekend, with domestic vets. Glad you got him to a vet. Please keep us updated, I'm not even sure what could cause what you were seeing. Good luck, I hope he recovers quickly!

Well Bink has a blockage in her tummy, the vet took an xray and is now trying to flush it out,All they can tell it is a white ball, we dont know what it is, but hopefully she will be ok. The worst case would be surgery to remove it. but with a laxative it may move

Went and saw bink this morning, she has a iv to hydrate her and they are not sure what the big blob in her tummy is yet, we got to see the xrays and we have copys, the lump is about 1/2in or 10-12mm across and round from the top , but what it is who knows, she has had food but regergtates it, so today we took her some of her favourite, bananas and pears, so we will see how that goes. We found out she had a bit of a hard life before we got her, xrays showed old rib wounds and a bit of MBD in her tail, old though. that was a a bit of a shock. but we will see what happens in the next couple of days, might have to make a hard decision, depending on what is found. they think in her present state of health she may not survive surgury .but she is putting on wieght ,up to just over 500gm, from 460

I'm really sorry to see that. It is an excellent xray though, thank you for posting it. Would you mind if I added it (or would you add it?) to the xray thread that Karen just created in the Advanced section?

I'm hoping for the best for Binky.

My mom's a radiologist(with some veterinarian experience). So I'll ask her what she thinks the blob is when she gets back :D

I'm sorry Bink is so obviously unwell but you are doing all the right things for her.

I'm not a particularly good interpreter of radiographs but it does seem reasonably clear why she has not been able to digest food with such a mass in the stomach. Has she passed any blood at all in her faeces and if so, was the blood occult (dark)? I have a view as to her condition but as I'm not a vet I would rather not state anything.

Laparotomy can be a high risk surgical option in veterinary medicine so it is wise to consider all options if the mass cannot be dislodged. I really hope for a good outcome for you and Bink.

Kia kaha.

Thanks so much for your reply, She is at Massey University small animal clinic so they are looking after her well. They are doing a ultra sound and more xrays shortly to see exactly what they are dealing with. They are putting dye in her and taking pics at differnt stages. She seems to be in a bad way at the moment shallow breathing. They have hydrated her with a IV and given her laxitives to try and delog it if possible. She did have pin worms and possible she knew she was unwell and would have ate anything. They checked her feces today and there were no more worms, but her bottom is still swollen and inflamed.

Fingers crossed for her. Will know more shortly ..

Thanks again, I was hoping it was food in there and not something more.

they gave bink a berium dye to see what her problem was and they found a blockage in her bowel , they scheduled surgury for tommow morning , they put her back in her incubator and she developed breathing difficultys so they pumped oxygen in to her incubator ,15min ago she passed away :(
