I was searching around for skinks on craig's list and came across this ad for a BTS:

"I have a juvenile blue tongue skink that I would like to rehome. He is a bit skittish but (s)he is still a baby and will grow out of it. (s)he's still in the "everything is gonna eat me" mode.
Unfortunately I do not have a cage to go with him as I broke it last week rearranging rooms :( so he's stuck in a little thing right now. He should have atleast a 30 gal breeder tank or larger. He will get to be around 2ft in length. They are very friendly and inquisitive lizards. I would love to keep him but I just don't have the time for it. And since he is stuck in a rubbermaid right now I figure now is a good time to get him a new home. "

They are keeping this poor thing in a rubbermaid! Poor baby is probably scared out of his mind, not to mentioned cramped. My family's taken in rescued lizards before and I'm going to bring this guy up to them. Poor little guy!!

As long as the tub is large enough and the BTS has proper temperatures, hides, water etc then it isn't really all that bad. Rubbermaid tubs are used by a lot of people, and while it isn't for everyone, it actually is an ok option. People with lots of blueys find it a very good way to keep many animals in decent sized enclosures but with minimal space and very easy cleaning etc.

It definitely doesn't sound like the current owner is very well prepared so it is a good thing that they recognize that and are rehoming the bluey (although they probably shouldn't have thought about it more before getting it initially!). I don't think this BTS is necessarily in really horrible conditions. Good luck convincing your family that you should get it! :D I'd love to see pictures.

All my adults are in small rubbermaids right now. I used to use plastic bins until I could afford big fancy tanks. Some people keep reptiles in bins year-round. It doesn't mention size of the bin at all.

Gotta love jumping all over a new member :kick:

Doesnt seem to me that the ad was posted by someone who is all that knowledgeable and would have an open top and suspended basking lights... I'd bet they were keeping it like a Snake, in a stackable closed rubbermaid...

The person in the ad did say she broke the tank she had the lizard in. Probably had it in a nice sized tank before.

I think one of the bigger issues here is the amount of assuming thats happening. Reptiles truly dont need all that much time, especially if you have only one. Perhaps they thought they could manage and was only just managing to do so, but reducing the bts to a rubbermaid was the last straw for them and they genuinely realised that a bts was not the pet for them? Or it could be the other way around, they have been keeping him in a rubbermaid, and perhaps after finding out they supposedly 'grow to 2ft' (Now, unless if my ft to cm calcs are incorrect, they get no where near that big, no?) and thus couldnt be kept in a rubbermaid, they made up the whole tank breaking bit and chucked in the excuse of having no time (an excuse often legitimately used by people thinking in the best interests of their animals) so as to avoid scrutiny or abuse from any potential buyers after realizing their pet gets bigger then they initially thought? Thats the thing, we dont know.

Imo, no person should be scrutinized for admitting they can not care for their pet and trying to find it a good home. No amount of research equates to caring for the real thing - a new pet owner may end up with a pets thats the exception to everything they have read, for example, in which case they may find themselves incapable of adequate care, as everything they had been preparing for was made irrelevant. If they brought the pet knowing full well they could not care for it or afford it or whatever, far enough, but in this situation all they are saying is that they have no time - the reason as to why is not given, therefore assumptions will get us no where.

Now, Im not bashing the OP or any one person, but harsh, unnecessary assumptions without any real basis to go on is just a bit too common in these sorts of threads.

On a different note, I hope you get him! You really should be more regular around here you know, hahaha~ ;) Post pics if you do :D

On the info about different types on this site it says meraukes can grow up to 28inches, and IJ's 18-22 inches, 2 foot is only 24inches. :)

Meraukes rarely get 26inches and it was only that one that got to 28 inches. BTS are usually around 18-24 inches

We definitely don't want to do that or for it to appear like Little Hook is being jumped on. Her opinion is very valid and there are quite a few people on here who would agree that keeping blueys in tubs is unacceptable. It is just good to know all sides / opinions in order to make an informed decision. Based on the information, I wouldn't say that the bluey in question is being horribly neglected or in a really bad situation. It would probably make a great pet and being in a rubbermaid temporarily, even if it is small, won't do it any harm. :D I hope she can get him.
