Another Newbie

Postby Bundy » Sat Dec 24, 2011 7:14 pm

:D :D Hey All,

Just wanted to introduce myself and say it's great to find a website that's full of knowledge & advice :D It's very important.

Although my husband and I found our young blotched bluey in the back yard (VIC, Australia), he's the most wonderful pet! My husband was whipper snippering the garden and didn't see him there. Needless to say, my husband panicked and called out for a bucket. I went outside and there is this cute little guy. He had a slight gash on his back, which my husband treated with some warm water and antiseptic, our little bluey was calm the entire time. We originally had him in a box with grass and we weren't quite sure what to do with him. When his wound healed, my husband decided to make a terrarium. We named him Bundy and fell in love with him - he has a lot of personality! (Although we don't know the sex, I dare say it doesn't matter as we're not planning on breeding). He seems really content but my husband fusses. Is it possible to spend too much attention on your Bluey? Kill him with kindness (so-to-speak - not literal of course)? Bundy has everything...logs, hidey holes, rocks, grass, heat light, sun globe, moon globe, temp gauges - all the necessary things, but I'm not all too sure if we're over-feeding him...You see, he has his vitamin powder (which we bought from the pet shop) and meal-worms, he also gets fruit (banana strawberry on occasion - though he LOVES banana!), greens, egg - but he also loves the meal worms (naturally so), but I'm just wondering how much they would eat if they were in the wild - and should you compensate what you feed them, to the exercise they get?? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Glad to be here! I hope everyone is having a Great Xmas and staying safe! :ohyes: 8)

Cheers
Trudy

Wow! What a beautiful lowland! I would just recommend that you make sure you are not violating any laws by keeping your little guy. They are addicting animals. Don't be surprised if you find yourself wanting more soon. Welcome to the site!

Welcome!! Bundy looks gorgeous, that is a beautiful picture. I'd love to see more photos. :D

Don't worry about asking questions. The forum would be pretty boring if all answers were available and no one needed any further advice. The diet chart is pretty good, but feel free to ask questions. They don't eat too much, if he is full grown then feeding once or twice a week should be fine.

Thanks All for the very warm welcome :D

I do believe you can own Bluey's in Victoria, Australia without a license? (If anyone out there knows, but I'm pretty sure it's all good). Yes, he is a gorgeous little guy. Funnily enough he has the biggest appetite, but he's still a growing lad. This morning, I cleaned out his 'den' as he's shedding for the 2nd time in about a month (is that normal?) and he was sitting high on his rocks. I showed him the container with the meal worms in it and tapped on the glass. He looked, but didn't move (he normally comes down to the window when he wants some. I just said to him "Oh well, when you're ready" - I leave the room to do something, and 2mins later I return and there he is, face pressed against the glass :hehe: Funny little guy.

Due to requests for more photo's, we only have the three so far (one above, and the two in this post), but I'll be sure to get some more done...

Once again, thank you for your welcome! :ohyes:

Cheers

I had a quick Google and read that you can keep blotchies without licenses in Vic, but Id double check with your local CALM/ DET/ whichever wildlife place you have there to double check with all recent laws- they should have reptile licensing info on their site. While Wa is pretty crazy when it comes to reptile laws, I recommend being careful with the thought "its all good even if someone knows" - Here, you could get fined, your entire collection confiscated etc if you are caught with an illegally obtained animal, even if you are nurturing it back to health  Its ridiculous! Vic might be different though~

Hes gorgeous and welcome to the forum! May I ask what sort of camera you use? The photos, they just have a very strong vibrancy to them I dont recall having ever seen in a photo

Hi there Nae,

Thanks for the info! I will check them out. I know different states in Oz have very stringent rules on licensing, where others don't, which just confuses a situation.

The photo's were taken with Nikon D700. My husband is a very good photographer and takes a lot of pride in his work. Needless to say, I'm unable to get my grubby fingers on his Nikon's.

Another thing - is it only blotchies who tend to have such such a vibrant blue tongue? It looks almost 'Electric' blue. Or perhaps because he's a youngin? I come from NSW and used to see the Eastern Blue quite frequently, and they're tongues never seemed as blue as Bundy's...Just curious...

Hi Bundy,

Yes you can keep blotchies in Victoria without a licence. I have 8 of them ! (If you decide you want another, let me know !!) Blueys are gorgeous. Bundy has interesting colouring. Love his face. And yes, keeping them is addictive ! If you're at all concerned, go to the DSE website (Department of Sustainability and Environment) and it will show you what you need or don't need a licence for  (Gosh, that's rather peculiar English but I think you know what I mean !) :D

Oh, and welcome ! :welcome:
