Snails - Do they need supplements?

Postby Blucas » Sat Dec 17, 2011 10:51 am

I've got some GALS coming in t'post. I'm intending to breed them for skink food. Just wondering if/how I should dust them?

If you get those breeding you have perfect bluey food!! Good luck, I'd love to have a snail breeding colony set up. If you are successful, please post pictures of your setups etc - it would be great for others to learn from. :D

I second this! Snail colonies sound like a nice staple if you can make it work!

Will do. From what I've been reading I shouldn't have any problems, most people seem to get overrun with them. Got a 2foot fishtank set up, and will get some earthworms to do the maintenance for me. Should be a cheap way to keep Gonzo well fed and happy.

Good luck- I tried breeding snails and could never make it work. I use to buy them at the pet store, but they don't sell them any more. I just offered them to my blueys as is. I had one that only ate enough of the shell to get to the yummy inside and another that would eat every bit of his and then it the left over shell from the other.

@Blucas: Where are you ordering the snails from? I was wondering where I could pick some up as feeders, and having a colony of those as opposed to crickets sounds far more appealing!

She, but yep, I'm in the UK and just getting them from someone with too many babies. From what I've read they're illegal to keep in a lot of the US?

Giant land snails are illegal. Not normal garden varieties.
Sorry about the gender switch up. It must be the 5th time this year I did that

No worries, 'tis easily done. I was really shocked to read that GALS are illegal, they're pretty popular pets over here.
