closed eye, second lid?

Postby Scooter_in_Kindergarten » Thu Nov 17, 2011 7:52 pm

This has happened before and my skink was fine after a day. This time, it has been 3 days. . .
The same eye as last time is shut but only the 'second lid' if that makes sense? The eye isn't shut, as if he was sleeping, but just red and fleshy like he has closed a second lid in a sense. My skink usually does it when he's shedding and rubbing up against a rock, swallowing food, or just stretching. BUT, this 'second lid' has been closed for three days and he hasn't self corrected it yet. It's still wet and the color hasn't changed. But it has been like this for what seems like an abnormally long time. . .
Should I be worried. . .cuz I am :/

That isn't normal - can you post pictures?

You can probably get it to open with a damp washcloth if you are careful. I've seen something that sounds similar, but I'd prefer to see pictures before jumping to conclusions.

It would probably be wise to get him checked out by a vet. If antibiotic are required it isn't something that any of us can help with. Good luck!

These were pics from last time, I almost posted thread on here, but next day it had corrected itself.
Now it is doing it again, it started Tuesday afternoon. All day Wednesday he was like that and all of today he was like that. :( He can still shut his eye when he is sleeping, but when he opens it they eye is still the same (tucked back in his head)

I can't be certain from the picture but I would think that is the nictitating membrane (third eyelid). It is possible for an infection to present in the membrane without showing in the eyeball or other areas surrounding the eye. He could also be protecting an injured eye by keeping the membrane drawn across. I would be thinking vet at this stage as it has been a few days.

This isn't the same problem I've seen before, so I can't really recommend anything except a vet visit. Good luck, please let us know how it works out.

I can only say, I have never seen anything like that in any of my bts. I am not one that suggests running to the vet anytime you have any little issue, but if that was my skink I think I would probably take it just because I have absolutely no idea what is causing it, or whether or not it is something serious.

Honestly though, if he seems healthy in every other way, I would probably wait until it was like that for 4 or 5 days before I would call the vet for an appointment. There is nothing more frustrating than having the problem magically disappear the day of the appointment.

It can be a sign of an infection of some sort or physical damage to the eye. Blueys who have RI often look similar.

Thank you for all of your advice!!
Scooter's eye is still closed over with the nictitating membrane (3rd lid) El Lobo mentioned :(
I made an appointment on Friday with the Vet, unfortunately they can't fit me in until Monday. So I will let you all know Monday night how it goes.

While taking pictures of the skinks, I have caught this on film. However, never had a skink have it closed all the time. First thought through my mind was trauma to the eye.

Good luck at the vets and hoping for the best!

Yup, I've seen the "third lid" sometimes too. One time my BTS tried to use the third lid to push his eyelid-shed off... at least it looked like it.

The first picture is of Scooter's eye after the probing.
The second picture is of her good eye, she looks so confused.
The third picture is of the tools used to probe her eye.
And lastly is Scooter at home sleeping on 'Dad's' tummy, she was very worn out after the vet visit.

Again, thank you to everyone who gave great advice, I'm glad I was able to get Scooter into the vet because it turned out to be a lot more serious than we had thought.
The vet said it was very inflamed and said it must have been caused by trauma to the eye. He then said he needed to look and see if there is even an eye left. !!!!!!!
 My heart dropped.
I almost passed out when the vet said, "Yes, the eye is gone." while he is sticking those little q-tips into Scooter's eye socket.
It turns out, he just couldn't find it because of all the blockage.
There is a hematoma (or collection of blood) near the front of the eye and a drainage of fluid from the actual eye that is causing Scooter to be unable to correct her eye. The reason the Vet thought that they eye was gone was beacuse the hematoma was so large that it was making it almost impossable to find her eye tucked back in her head.

Scooter will be fine, she is on 4 different medications, one oral anti inflamatory and 3 types of drops. The Vet said it should correct itself in 3 days. :goodluck:

We concluded that she had probably initially just tucked her eye back because of a minor bump or scratch and then irritated it by rubbing it in her tank.

I hope my experience can help out anyone else that goes through this, it seems very uncommon.
