Could this little one be lost? (West. BTS Pics :D)

Postby Nae » Fri Nov 11, 2011 9:31 pm

Well! Whilst playing around with my sisters new 3DS thingy, I got called out to help mum and dad figure out what it was they were looking at (they got the 'some sort of skink' right :D)

And oh my god, it was a western bluetongue.

Image

I was so happy.

Now, we never get these guys out here. Plus, he is in IMMACULATE condition, with only one tick (which is inevitable). Hes also rather friendly. Thus, I am convinced he is lost. I have taken him in and mum is going to check out the notice board, but I wont actually be able to check with the shire until Monday as to whether or not he actually belongs to someone (They will be able to check licensing records.)

What do you guys think? I must say though, he (and his owner if he has one) is incredibly lucky he has fallen into the hands of someone who knows what he is and how to care for him.

Hes so beautiful

He's beautiful! You should check with Brett. Hopefully Boofhead didn't get lost.

Canada would definitely be a fruitful place to begin my search :P

Also, another question for WA reptile keepers - Say if I dont find his owner, what would happen to him? What with license and taking from the wild regulations, how would I show that he is indeed not wild (Something I am 99% sure of) and thus shouldn't be released. Is there anyway I could either a) get a license and keep him myself or b) pass him off to someone else who does have a license?

I thought of Brett, but unless hes on vacation up here and brought him with him, theres no way the little guy could have crawled here (Considering it takes about 3 hours driving!)

Took him out on the grass :D

My bad, he is coomassie's new friend. He must have had quite a swim over to you but he looks ready to come back to delaware.

He is beautiful though. I kind of hope you get to keep him. You have all the luck...

If they can't find anyone who has a license in your area, and they wanted to take him from you, I'd simply state that he escaped from you and will notify them if he shows back up.

Then call back later on (and get a different person) and apply for the permit lol

Im afraid plane tickets are out of my budget Coomassie, so you'll have to come and get him ;) As much as I would like to keep him, I really do hope I find the owner - There is just so much rules, laws etc in regards to keeping reptiles here, that even if I explain about my concerns about him being lost, they might just take it as me being someone trying to avoid a fine after realising that I am illegally keeping an animal.

The reptile laws are ridiculous - Sure, if someone has more then one illegal animal in their possession and clearly knows that what they are doing is wrong (eg: keeping them hidden in the house.), then persecute them, but the way they are now, someone like me, who is thinking about the owners who perhaps made a mistake and are now fretting over the loss of their rather expensive pet, could be fined a ridiculous amount and possibly prevented from having any reptiles in the future. After talking to other WA reptile owners, Im scared to even call CALM :/

MissMeg, I highly doubt hes pregnant (or shes) :D As westerns and centralians squish themselves out like pancakes whilst sunbaking~ so while he looks fat from above, from the side hes only a few cm high~

Oddly enough SD, westerns live in the south of WA and NT I believe, cause that makes perfect sense and all  But no, I honestly highly doubt he is wild - For one, here we are rife with ticks. All the shingles are covered, yet he only has one. Plus aside from a shedding injury, hes flawless, and waaay to friendly. (He fell asleep in my lap when I took him out to bask before I got the lighting set up)

Brad, that could actually work...Just ring up so as then to 'let them know I have seen a western in my yard." And if they say no one has one, then just proceed to assume it must be a wild one far from home - I highly doubt they will waste their time looking for one lizard. (Especially since, well, if you've seen my photography project, well, where the dog is is my yard. Finding one western is like finding a needle in a haystack )

However, from then one I will have to keep him illegally, as even with a permit he has to actually be ON the permit, which is done by a licensed reptile seller.

Although....I could get ANOTHER western....then when it comes to vet time I can just alternate who it is that on the permit accordingly  As living out here, unless someone dobbed me in, I could get away with an elephant

It doesn't work like that though, with out license systems you need to have record of all your animals. So if they claimed it was theirs they would check and see in their records that no westerns are listed (assuming the OP doesn't already own westerns)

I for one truly believe animals know where to go for help and they sense who the people are that will not hesitate to care for them. Atleast that is what I have been telling myself for years, stray after stray has managed to find me somehow!

Well, Ive decided what I shall be doing with him (And will be cross posting from another Australian forum from which I have been seeking legal advice.)

"Ive been doing a lot of thinking taking into account everyones advice, and have decided.
I will call CALM to inquire as to whether anyone in my area owns a Western who is missing, as I have one in my yard who I suspect may be a pet and just wanted to double check. If yes, he will go home. If not, I honestly think he will make it outside - my yard is massive, safe and secure. Even if they do not live here, its not as if he can breed or anything, correct? I live along the coast, in the Jurien Bay area - Could they perhaps be rather rare, hence the reason in my years of living here myself and no one has ever seen one. (Ive shown people photos of both centralians and westerns when they asked what sort of reptile I am planning on getting).

There are not many people around this area, thus I dont think his friendliness is attributed to him being used to humans, however I am close enough to town for him to have possibly made it this far in a week. Various factors have me convinced that he could very well be a pet, but not being a domesticated species I do think he will make it in my yard.

The more and more I think about it, I truly do not want to keep him, as much as I would like too I had had enough of keeping reptiles illegally with my shingle I had when I was little (Come on, who hasnt done that?) I had him for many years, found it he was illegal to have, then spent a few more years constantly worrying, until he unfortunately passed. I dont want that again. Despite the fact I could keep an elephant here without people knowing, I am willing to spend all the extra money to have a legal animal, as I want to be able to have an awesome set up in my living room, I want be able to take him to the vet, tell people about him, not have to worry, not keep him hidden and secret. Plus, I will be moving to Perth soon for reasons, and thus might not be able to hide him.

Am I doing the right thing? I truly do hope so, otherwise I just dont know... "

You definitely are doing the right thing.

As you said, these aren't domestic animals. They never lose the ability to survive in their native habitat. All you need to do is look at our captive born blueys and you'll see "wild" behaviours in them.

Things like defending themselves/taking cover when you reach quickly from above yet being calm when ppicked up from underneath shows they are able to recognise predatorial danger.

and all you need to do is put a moving feeder insect in front of a bluey and it wont matter if they haven't ever seen a live insect before.. they'll know they want to eat it! It amazed me the first time i saw my little dude eat a snail. he knew exactly how to tackle it without ever having seen one.

The western will be fine! With any luck you'll see him around in your yard from time to time.

Pretty sure selling an illegal animal is more illegal than keeping it -.-'
