Hello there, Welcome home!

Postby phaemas » Mon Oct 24, 2011 3:46 pm

Welcoming home my new skink today! Here are his/her pics.

She's still un-named (I assume its a she.) but i'm not sure her breed(if you can call it that).

Her tail is crooked its not just the picture. She's also got a few ''ridges'' along her back. I'm worried about MBD. And I don't think she's had heat for awhile but her lights are just turning on.

Looks like a she. Give her extra calcium supplements. And can we see pictures of the ridges on her back? It could be a sign of malnutrition.

She's an IJ. It does look like she's had/has MBD to some extent.

A vet visit to check for MBD and internal parasites is suggested.

she looks pretty :) even with a crooked tail and a few ridges, her light colours are cute. her Y pattern is cool.

the rule that applies to all reptiles bought this way, is that there is ALWAYS a catch.

give her calcium supplement every meal and make sure she has UVB light and good, stable, temps so she will bask.

if its mbd and she recieves treatment asap it will not get worse. you just have to be careful not forgetting the supplement i think.

as fatal said, vet visit. if its got slight MBD you never know what else it will carry that you dont want marvin to get.

I've tryed to get pics of the ridges but it just doesn't show on camera. I plan on building her a huge tank to build up mussel because she's ALL fat right now. I also need to pick up Calcuim&DC3 supplement because i'm running low.

Try giving her a UVB lamp as well. Take her outside if it's warm where you live. Any amount of UVB helps :D (Tea Cup loves to be on the windowsill, even though most UVB is filtered out by glass)

dont worry about that cage issue first though. i think the cage she had looked fairly ok, and from the pics she looks okay too?

go get the supplement and vet visit first.

They lied and told us she was in a 40 gallon tank but she's in a 20 gallon fish tank. >:(

She'll be getting one made from glass/mirror?

how long should a healthy skink her age be?

*facepalm*
why did you buy it even if they lied about everyth........oh no matter. you can count her as a rescue. at least she seems to be in some health and looks good. and you must have a lot of money to spare right now i guess.
--------------------------------------------------------------

if she is about a year then i guess between 35 - 50 cm is okay. some grow quicker than others and some arent quite as big.

still, vet visit and supplement/heat/uvb comes first IMO.

they said 35-40 CENTIMETERS

vet check definitely. calcium can never hurt either, since they just excrete the excess.

also, why would you build a cage out of a mirror?

Using mirrors with an animal who has limited intelligence is almost cruel IMO. Most animals can't recognize the mirror is themselves reflected, and instead think it's another animal and therefore competition/a threat.

IMO, don't use mirror, or paint it over so the animal can't see it.

Okay, I'll tell my dad to put somthing over it but the reason he was using it is because glass is expensive where he lives and the mirriors are the right size.

Or go to a pet store and spend a little extra for a nice terrarium. Zilla and Exo-Terra both make high quality tanks. Some stores, like PetCo, have $1 per gallon sales fairly frequently.

I agree with the other posters: please don't use a mirror. :kw:

Doesn't have to be PetCo. There are other stores out there...I'm sorry, why wasn't the tank set up prior to getting this animal? She sounds like a serious impulse buy that was not thought out and we are concerned for her welfare.

i would ask if there is a craigslist in canada, but then I doubt that you would get the proper disinfectants for a used cage. *sigh*

Please, please, please cover the mirrors if you use the mirrors. That poor skink could really get stressed thinking theres another skink in its cage.

i understand that some parents totally support their kid's pet interests...but many do not. It is a BAD IDEA to get multiple pets while you live with your parents. At any time they could decide that they will NOT pay for vet bills, or set your animals loose, or...like what just happened to a member here, put them together which resulted in the skinks injuring each other, due to no fault of their owner, just the mom...

It sounds like your dad isnt willing to spend the money to get a proper cage, and is just using what is convenient...is that fair to the skink?

what are the dimensions of a 20 gallon fish tank? thats definitely way too small. if you can't provide for your animals then please don't get them. its cruel to put your pets in poor conditions. i hope you quarantine the skink and go the vet asap. and hopefully you can get a bigger tank asap too.
