new enclosure

Hi everyone,

It's been a while since the last time i post on this forum, so i thought i would show you guys this project i was working on in the summer with a help from my buddy.

I was originally building this enclosure for ackie monitors, but halfway through i changed my mind and decided to give it to my skink instead. I'm on my last semester in college and with the current workload i thought ackies will be a little too much for me.

the cage size is 60 x 22 x 23 (inches), made from plywoods. the front 'lip' was originally about 7 inches deep to hold substrate for ackies, and i cut down to about 5 inches now. took me and my buddy about a month to finish this project, although it's far from perfect, im quite happy with the result.

That's true, the plan was to actually make a 'burrowing box' for the ackies because there's just no way i can make the enclosure taller (for deeper substrate). height was an issue since this enclosure has to fit on my steel rack.

Once i realized that the preparation for ackies is more complicated that i thought i dropped the idea and i purchased a leachianus gecko instead, and the enclosure goes to my skink. I'm happy, and mr. skink is happy too

I'm not sure who bred my skink btw, i got him from a local reptile store. he's a cool guy

That's a pointless statement considering the set up is for his skink.

Nice enclosure! I hope to make one like this for Onyxia someday, maybe over summer if partner will help.

Do any of you awesome DIY'ers have plans for these cool tanks?
How did you do the glass? (my bf's dad can do carpentry type stuff like this, but i'm not sure about glass cutting...)

I ordered the glass from a local glass & mirror store, unless you know someone who's experienced with cutting glass, i think ordering custom size from a glass store is the best and safest way

I find installing the sliding glass tracks to be the trickiest part. For the enclosure itself, you can just buy large sheet of plywood at homedepot and ask them to cut it to specific size, get some screws for wood and a drill and you're good to go

The enclosure looks great! You did a really nice job on it.

To be honest though, the thing that impresses me the most is that you decided to wait on the ackies because you realized that you probably don't have the time for them yet. It is rare that people will delay getting want they want because they are concerned about what is best for the animals. I commend you on that decision, and I am confident that your ackies will be very well taken care of when you get them down the road.

Nice looking Viv, Good Job, the only thing i would recommend is changing the UV for a tube light with a reflector to maximize coverage. (just my preference)

I have one of those compact uv's in one of my beardie tanks, i've placed it next to the basking light so the beardie can absord the uv while basking
