One of my males has sprung into life today and decided the mood is right. So far this morning he has chased 4 different females, another male and a yearling (none of whom were that interested). There seems to be no thought to following any particular female. The trigger for his response seems to be another shingle walking away from him. He will chase any female, male or juvenile until he is next to them and then try to mate if he finds a female. If he finds a male they will bump each other out of the way but no true aggression (?yet). I've put the divider in to prevent him mating with the wrong females and any potential fights.
He picked quite a strange day for it as today it is overcast and not very warm. So far the other male is not showing any interest.
So much for monogamy...

That must be so interesting to observe. I'd noticed that movement of the 'female' tended to get the male going, but maybe I should offer more movement area next spring.
Please keep up the observations. Always great to hear

Trust me. This is NOT a male issue. Female bts are extremely permiscuous.

haha,my blotchys do that, usually before its time for the females to mate, the younger males chase and hold anything that moves, even juvies
my old male eastern stumpy used to cover 2 females each season, both showed signs of being gravid, but unfortunatly nothing came from the younger female, possably slugs
