Skink bag

Postby Linnea » Thu Sep 15, 2011 9:21 am

Litchie is always in the latest skink fashion.

this time, he is trying out an idea i had. I saw Susanns thread about emergency bags, and this is my own solution XD probably works great for moving him, or taking him outside without attracting attention.

(My grandmother helped me with the sewing)

note that we only made the inside of the bag, the bag was something cheap we found. then we started adding the filling and sewing. all seams are on the inside so he cant get caught in them, and he cant get caught in the zipper on the side either.

He is inside the bag on all the photos, and seemed to enjoy hiding in it. There is a hole on the side for air and for getting in and out by himself, which i think is vital to feeling safe.
Its fleece on the inside, with cotton filling. This will somewhat isolate him from the cold if its windy outside, as it normally is here, and if needed ill put something like a heater there. Susann is helping me buying one of the heaters.
There is a small, matching, pillow which i removed and put in his terrarium on the cool side instead, for now. Note that he went out of his hide and into the bag all by himself.

note that i did not choose the pattern. but i do like dinosaurs.

YOU MADE THIS??!! MADE it?!

Holy skink bag!
AWESOME!!!!!!

It's like a little lunch bag with a great big treat on the inside. And I like the dinosaurs too!

I have to say it again:
AWESOME!

If I didn't have so many reptiles I'd have to buy some sewing services from you and your grandma!
It looks so profesionally done!
(I can't stop using the exclamation points!)

GOOD JOB!

I don't care if you didn't make the outside, I'm still in awe.

I would love to see the hole you are talking about, I can't quite picture it... He can come and go? Can you close it so you can carry him around without him coming out?

on the first picture you can see the hole : D it looks a bit rough, but theres filling on the sides of it too! its not big enough for him to fall out, but big enough to go in and out with no problems if he wanna :)

he stuck his head out of it while i was walking around with him a little, but i couldnt get the camera in time!

and yes, see the zipper on the side? i didnt close it entirely since it was the first time i let him use it, but its 100% closeable, except for the hole on the side :) but since the hole is on the front i have a good look at what hes up to.

Interesting stuff! I've been using a reusable shopping bag(with a T shirt or two for him to burrow in) for the same purpose. He usually stays inside it by himself...I can tie the bag off to discourage him from coming out or tie the opening shut completely to keep him in. I'd be somewhat wary of having a hole he could go in and out of that can't be shut lest he enjoy wandering off...a lot of this depends on the temperature...they are a lot less likely to stay put when it gets warmer.

the original bag is a cheap carrying bag - i took a sturdy and harder "shell" material bag since i think blueys dont mind if its shaky being carried in a bag as long as what theyre standing on isnt moving like with a softer bag.
the original bag was bought yes.

the fleece with me and my grandmother planned together is a rather thick fleece fabric yes. if youre gonna sew one then make sure to cover the zipper line very properly so they wont get stuck when theyre playing around in it. litchie also seems to like to put his head under this extra line.

make sure he gets air by making a hole for him. the hole on the first picture is placed like that so he will know whats up and down and can peek outside.

grandmother filled the fleece at the bottom with some cotton - i think this was a good idea.

the fleece is first sewn together with a sewing machine them put in the bag and either partly glued with children safe glue and then sewn with thin theads through the outside "shell" - so little that its not noticed. then its filled with cotton and sewn together : D

note that the hole also has fleece so that there wont be any injuries if he peeks out. my skink likes to hang his head and front legs out when i carry him.

buy fleece that can be used for babies. non coloured is probably best if youre picky about colorants and fabric treatments.
