Urates with crystals?

Postby ExtremeJustin » Wed Sep 14, 2011 5:41 pm

I came earlier to find this in the new skink's tank. I bagged it and the regular poop that was nearby in case I need to have it tested.

I have seen recent threads about urates with crystals and wondering if it was the same thing.

No, it's a SKINK not a SKUNK. Er, no, it's not a Blue Tongued Skank---although I do think I dated one of those at some point.

I can't really tell from the picture, but urates with crystals once or twice isn't an issue. If it becomes the norm then you should look at the diet, but because this is just a one-time thing so far I wouldn't worry at all. :D

It was established a long time ago on this site that yellowish crystals were oxalates which are deposited as a result of feeding excessive amounts of some foods. Presence in small amounts is relatively normal, although large amounts may point to the potential for organ damage, particularly the kidneys.

The problem may be exacerbated by feeding these foods in combination with high levels of calcium addition to food leading to the formation of calcium oxalate crystals.

There are lots of websites that list foods by oxalate content and implications for kidneys.
If you wait, all that happens is that you get older. M. Andretti

Thank you Scott and Katrina. Who knows what that BTS was eating before I got her :( I'm going to try and make sure that I avoid or feed low amounts of the foods on those lists.
