Estrella pictures

Postby Lea » Thu Aug 25, 2011 6:29 pm

Estrella is back and looking fit after another tough winter. She's battled another bout of pneumonia, thanks to her runtish attributes and an unfortunate cleft palate, an episode of mites, which I think must have come from substrate, but thankfully got on top of that very quickly and a complete refusal to eat, even in the warm confines of an indoor enclosure. She lost so much weight, I feared the worst, but after a few weeks of syringe feeds, she picked up and has started to put weight back on her bony frame.

For those of you who don't know Estrella, don't be alarmed! She has not been neglected! She has no toes, a deformed spine and kind of leans to one side as if she's had a stroke, but she has come a long way! Born VERY tiny, she has battled her whole life to survive, but 2 1/2 years later, she's still a fighter. She picks up everything going, infection-wise and seems to flounder at the slightest set back. Winter always brings a fresh round of fears for her life, even though she is kept indoors during the cold months.

These pictures are a reflection of her fighting spirit! She has returned from near death, yet again and has literally doubled her weight in the last couple of weeks! I hope you enjoy seeing pictures of this tough little girl!

As a comparison, here she is next to Nippy, an adult shingleback. She's about a 1/4 his body weight right now!

I love the way she always stands up so high. She looks so proud and defiant. She has certainly developed into a beautiful skink!

What a wonderful story - it is amazing she made it to two and a half years. I am always happy to see new pics of her, she does look regal the way she poses. :D

I adore this girl! So glad to see her still fighting and adorable as ever. Nice to see some updates on your gang too Lea! You (and your awesome skinks) are definitely missed when you aren't around!

I see Estrella as testament to how much an animal will fight against adversity when they know they have a carer willing to make the journey with them.

Well done to both Estrella and Lea.
