mr.tubbins wont eat?!

Postby reaperreptiles » Wed Aug 03, 2011 11:15 am

So my male northern hasnt eaten in who know when, i put food out but i never see him eat. i might notice a few bites missing but nothing big. I have tried fruit, veggies, dog food cat food, crickets, f/t mice. the whole lot. he's not really losing any weight just doesnt seem to want to eat more than a few bites every week. unlike my female who will eat her entire plate within 30 seconds. he's about 10 months old and somewhere around 550 grams. ill try and get some pics up later today.

I wouldn't worry about it until he starts loosing weight. Keep an eye on him just in case but it shouldn't be anything to worry about. Also, check your temperatures. If they can't get warm enough to digest their food, they won't eat.

Like coomaise said, I would check the temps. And I was thinking... maybe he is still stressed from the fighting.

With Joey I have to pick him up and literally put his nose IN the food for him to eat. Try that. Sometimes I have to do it several times. But it works.

I have tried everything, he is currently hunting crickets right now which is a good sign. if i can spend the week or so giving bugs then it should bring up his food drive a bit. He shows no interest in dog/cat food, pellets, veggies, fruits and I even tried some mouse brains but nothing. Im gonna try and get him to lick up some reptaid for vitamins and im dusting the crickets and feeding them oranges and carrots. so ill give you guys an update on him in about a week.

I normally wouldn't worry about this at all unless you notice weight loss. I.e. if he goes down to about 500 grams. However, since there is also a wound involved, it might be a bad sign.

Force feeding or trying everything to get him to eat isn't fixing the problem. Is there any reason for him to be stressed? Is there any sign of lethargy?

They don't need all that much food, so a few bites a week should be fine if there is no weight loss. But given the wound and all that has happened recently, I'd monitor closely and possibly take him back to the vet. It does sound like you are overworrying (especially if he is eating a bit).... but how much noise / stress would they have in their lives?

Him not eating started before the fight. he has been super active today, he ate 6 crickets and licked up some reptaid I prepared just in case. He has been doing great, after cleaning his wounds and his feeding he is already becoming more active. Its looking good on his end as of right now :)

Well after going through my records I have come up ith this. When I got mr.tubbins he was overwieght weighing in at 550. He had never eaten anything but cat food, so getting him to eat veggies has proven hard. With a diet he went down to 500 grams where he looked healthy. With the stress of the fight he lost about 50 grams. He is back up to 491 grams now. He won't eat any canned food but has taken crickets, reptaid and a blackberry. Anybody have any other good ideas on high protien food he may show interest in? I'm going to offer him some egg today.

Zoomed's "Cann o Snails" always seems to get my skinks out of their hides and practically ripping the food dishes out of my hands. The product is more of a treat though. It just might stimulate his appetite. Good luck.

I wonder if I can pick those up at petsmart or petco. might have to order them online, either way thanks. thats a great idea. he did take some egg today, i boiled it long enough for the white to get hard but so the yolk is still semi-runny. He ate all the yolk and slime and pickd at the white. :D

You could try roaches or superworms. I know Coomassie needs to chase his food down some times. He won't take any interest in stuff that isn't moving but if a roach runs by his face, he will go after it.
