New IJ Blue-tongued skink

Postby Gene0514 » Mon Jul 11, 2011 5:07 pm

Hi everyone
I am new to this forum, but I have been reading the care sheet a lot.
Yesterday I attended the White Plains reptile expo in Ny and bought an Irian Jaya bts from "Sticky Lizards". He's only about 6" long with his tail and is currently in my 55 gallon.

Here are some pics of his enclosure

And here are some of him

Congratulations!

He's a cute little guy, and that looks like a nice setup!

Can anyone give me an idea of what his growth rate will be?

Growth will depend on genetics and diet... but expect fast. Little guys grow like weeds! They are typically adult size in 12-18 months approximately.

My Meruake went from 7-8" at 1 month old to 22" at 9 months old. He still seems to be growing, but it's nowhere near as fast as those first few months. I think it only took him 3 months to go from 8" to 16", was sort of shocking how quickly he grew. IJ are supposed to be smaller, but I'd imagine if fed well and he sheds regularly he will fill out that cage within a few months. :)

I started keeping a log of weights and lengths of Adalon after I had him for a few months and it's kind of fun to look back and see how much he changed from month to month, I'd recommend trying it as well!

Thanks!
Do you guys think he can stay in the 55 for life? Or should I get him a 40 breeder when he gets like over 14"

I decided I'll just get him the 40 breeder when he gets like 15" or so. Just for the extra width.

Here are some pics of him from today

And after taking these pics, he proceeded to begin defecating on me lol. I think he dropped a sperm plug on me. Or is he too young for that. I got some pics. It looked like a thin white string.

Soon after the last pics, the skink shed so he's looking great. I gave him a soak so all his shed came off. I made sure none was stuck on his toes or anything. He's very bright now and has nice orange bands.

Here are some pics:
