feeding trouble

Postby cguarino30 » Sun Jun 19, 2011 12:27 pm

I recently acquired a new BTS, which, according to the person I got it from, was originally wild caught, but has been in his care for over a year. The animal appeared to be in great health, and I was told that it had a good appetite. Since bringing it home almost 2 weeks ago, it has only eaten a grand total of 3 superworms, and has refused eggs, canned dog/cat food, fruit, vegetables, and anything else I have tried. It appears to be perfectly healthy in every other way, and is active and has defecated three times since coming home (all defecations are completely normal in size, color, consistency, etc.) The basking spot is 100 degrees and the cool end is 70 at the coolest part of the night. Any ideas? At what point should I get concerned? Thanks for your help.

moving any reptile will make it feel uneasy, so it can take a while for some to start eating again.

just make sure hes got a good hide or two and a water bowl with fresh water.

i dont think two weeks will affect a bts very much as long as they have water, some here only feed their adults once/twice a week. I feed every three days.

note that im not a very experienced skink owner yet, but i answer quick....so wait for more experienced people to answer too : )

Find out what the skink weighs, and monitor that. So long as it isn't losing much weight, you probably don't need to worry about it being picky.

A healthy skink should be fine going months without eating. Obviously, eating is better than not eating, but so long as nothing else seems wrong just keep offering good foods every few days and eventually it should eat.

Worry after it starts losing weight (and not just a gram or two!). Until then, if all else appears healthy then just keep offering healthy foods. :D
