Taming help

Postby Kelvin W » Thu Jun 16, 2011 12:20 pm

I've had my merauke skink for nearly a month and he still hides when he sees me shy is an understatement he was getting a bit better 2 weeks into having him but had a slight problem with the substrate and his lip so changed his viv and substrate 2 to 3 week in to havin him so started the whole getting used to me again. Right to the point now what is the best method to get him to like me

keep an eye on the lip thing and feed him normally.

when youre sure hes not ill ( the lip ), try to make it enjoyable to stay outside and see you. like, once every three days, make sure he sees you put a small treat in the terrarium.

If hes still very young and was bought from a breeder, maybe hes just scared?
Mine was from a petstore where lots of people stared at him, he moved around a lot and had a bully sibling who made him unable to hide. So he toughened up naturally.

So, conclusion, dont terrorize him and dont take out the hide, but be around him often. someone mentioned reading aloud beside a skink can make them calmer around you, you could try that an hour every day, and feed when you do it on feeding days?

But also, PATIENCE will be rewarded :D let him be another month?

I would never take him out his hide I don't even like getting to close to have a look because he will go further in his hide so I have just been letting him do his own thing. I'll just carry on changing his water and putting food in for him the book thing seems a good tip to try defo going to start trying that I've got a good book I want to read too perfect :D thank you for the tips.

i think someone here wrote that you can read the caresheet out loud too XD lol

umm, just a note. i dont think he will be accustomed to a voice in particular, theyre just not that type of animal. But perhaps reading will make him more accepting of a great "predator" being in the same room?

wait for more good tips from the other forum members with more experience, and you will get a few things to choose from : ) i have after all not tried reading for my bts myself since my bts was tame from the start.
