Mack is sure odd looking. You sure he/she isn't a hybrid? Temporal streak, clean banding etc.

Its interesting you say that bc I thought the same thing too. I was lucky enough to view both the parents and they were both in fact classic northerns. They told me every season they end up with a few 'odd' looking babies that have the neon yellow. Well, I was very interested in why this would happen so I contacted some 'experts' on genetics and some on blueys. Also met up with my local exotic vet at a show and had a long discussion on the matter of skinks genetics since he breeds almost all of the species himself. From information I gathered on literature and from the 'experts' I was surprised. Between the 70's and early 90's, without the knowledge of bts that we have today, many people cross bred northerns with easterns or other species and sold them as northerns. This integrade was them bred back to another northern who was then bred back to another northern. The bloodline now has blueys that look completely northern but still have the eastern or other species genes hidden way back in there DNA. Mack's parents, most likely, both have eastern(or some other species) DNA hidden in there coding from years down there bloodlines. Having crossed two classic northerns with hidden DNA sequences of eastern means that it is more likely possible that when bred you will have a baby or two that show more traits that are comparable with easterns or other species even though these babies are genetically northerns and when crossed with northerns will produce more northerns. If I breed Mack to my female classic that has clean bloodlines it is less likely I will end up with babies that look like mack, this will also weaken the hidden DNA sequence that mack exhibits and make it even more less likely to pass on again. Another possibility I was given is that Macks bloodlines could be traced back to the 'southern' northerns or the northerns that lie in the more southern parts of there territory. it has been observed that northerns found more north have lighter coloration while northerns found in the more southern regions tend to have darker colors and exhibit traits more common in easterns. The same goes with easterns, animals found farther north tend to show less black with brighter coloration while sounth they tend to have more striping and black markings. I am not anywhere near an expert, this is just information I have pulled from literature, while most of it is info I took from the experts I have talked with over the last few months. Visually, Mack looks very odd (those temporal streaks have faded away since that picture and the banding has broken up a bit and every shed continues to break apart further) but genetically speaking he is a northern and will produce northern babies.

I was thinking more along the lines of Northern x Irian Jaya. I'd love to see photos of the parents. Many Northerns circulating today have very faded portholes-hard to tell what few bloodlines we have left are actually 100% Australian scincoides.

Indeed Northerns do intergrade with Easterns and the line is very blurry. Most Northerns in the US I would supect are derived from animals collected near Darwin, or in general areas with little Eastern influence.(such as the animals shown in your avatar). I haven't seen any pictures of Northern x Eastern offspring but they could be very variable depending on how each of the parents looks. It'd be interesting to talk to breeders who've been working with closed groups for decades if anything eastern looking has popped up in their lines. Anyway I'd hope that breeders would take care selecting their animals and take care to produce and select animals without confusing origins and that represent what is seen in the wild/originally imported. Customers I'm sure will do the same.

yeah, i agree. Im a little iffy on his purity even still. Im holding off breeding at the moment just bc i dont want to make more integrades. Im working with my vet right now he's trying to come up with a way to DNA test to find out purity in reptiles. Im constantly in touch with him about his current findings. He's using Mack's DNA as a guinea pig for the experiment. If it works out it could be revolutionary for developing acurate methods to prove the purity of reptiles and find all sorts of cool genetic traits. I havent found any plugs so im assuming he is a she but who knows with skinks. Who knows, i could have been fed a bunch of crap from the breeders. i dont trust alot of breeders unless they are devout and care about the welfare of there animals. But hopefully ill be able to let you all know how the DNA testing in proceeding throughout the year. He is also working on trying to develop a way to DNA test to sex skinks since he breeds shinglebacks. Problem is they have no sex chromosomes, so he is trying to find other genetic methods to sex. Should be very interesting to see what happens. But until i figure out his/her genes for sure im not breeding (unless i can find a male northern for my pure female). I don't like integrades hybrids too much, mucks up the lines (in any reptile species) and in a way is kinda irresponsible just so people can make a quick buck. But I totally agree with you, im gonna make another trip to the breeder (eventually) so i can get some pics of the parents. Would love to know if anybody has ever had babies from a line that have 'odd' features or distinctive markings from other species. I have heard of it happening before.
