Can you freeze dog food?

Postby MissMeg » Thu May 26, 2011 5:19 pm

One of my biggest problems with feeding Ruckus dog food is that if I buy a big can of it, Im scared it goes bad. I usally keep it for a week, and only get two meals out of it and throw the rest out. Its such a waste of money.

I started to buy cat food because it came in those small cans, but the veggies in there arnt the greatest. I have found a dog food by Wellness wich is 95% meat, and the other 5% is proably a type of preservitive or something to bind it all together. It only came in big cans, Is it possible to freeze portions of the dog food so I dont have to throw it out? Or will this ruin it? or is this just not a good idea?

I've frozen dog food. I'll say it comes out more liquidy when warmed back up, but the skinks never seemed to care.

I completely understand that! I had to wait and lurk on here for three years before we moved out of our apartment and finally could get a bluey. It took a little while longer and a couple of skinks in desperate need of a good home to get more than one... but things have been going swimmingly since then!

Freeze dog food in ice cube trays or somehow seperate them into discrete blocks. Otherwise feeding time every day will involve you driving yourself slightly crazy trying to bash a frozen block of dogfood to pieces.

I freeze mine- Wellness dog food. I scooped out sizes I wanted and put it out on a cookie tray, then froze them all so they didn't touch. After that I just put them in a plastic bag in the freezer and it's all good. =)

I use an icecube tray to freeze the dogfood. Let is thaw naturally instead of microwaving it. It goes almost liquid in the microwave (yuk).
each day's a gift, not a given right.

To make things easier on you, so you don't have to wait forever for the food to thaw, put it in the fridge. I do that for my girl.

Do you mean freeze it, then take it out the night before or what not?

No, just keep it in the fridge.
