When to feed my BTS?

Postby MissMeg » Mon May 23, 2011 5:19 pm

I was looking on the care sheet and it says to feed my BTS every day to every other day, Or 2 to 3 times a week..

I feed Ruckus twice a week, and sometimes hell only eat once a week. Hell poke at his food the second day, but wont eat this. Is this normal? Should I try to offer food everyother day?

The main reason why I was looking this up, was because when I had my Iguana I was feeding him, and Ruckus in the morning about 10, 11 or so. Well, Ruckus hasnt been comming out of his hole lately until 7 or 8 at night. I dont want to put it in there in the morning, because im scared it will get bacteria. And I hesitate to feed him at 7 or 8, because his light goes off at 9:30, 10. When I feed him, I usally wait a little longer berfore I turn his light off, but thst cant be good for him (having uneven light cycles).

Whats your guys opinon on this? I looked at the care sheet, but all it said was "Feed them early enough so that they have plenty of time to bask and digest their food."

Also, how early is early? I dont think 3 or less hours is enough.

The caresheet probably should be edited, because for most blueys every second day or every three days is too much unless feeding very small portions. I only feed about once a week unless I am trying to get an underweight skink to gain weight or hoping that a lovely lady is preggo. For those cases, I usually offer food twice a week.

Three hours is fine. I would make sure they have at least an hour after eating to bask. Lots of people will leave food all day, I know of at least one person who will leave food for several days. :D

Oh my goodness. Several days? If theres just leafy greens in it Ive left it for a couple days, but not with dog/cat food. Im to scared of bacteria lol. (Im way to paranoid lol)

Ill cut down to feeding him once a week considering he doesnt even really eat the second day anyway.

And Ill try to feed him in the early afternoon, maybe if he smells the food it will coax him out of his hole sooner :D hopefully.

Thanks Katrina

No worries. I usually feed on the weekends, as I have more time to prepare food and can put it in there earlier to coax the sleepy ones out.

Weekly feedings definitely don't hurt. I can post pics of Jaxi if anyone is concerned it isn't enough food! Make life pretty easy too.

I belive yea lol.

Ruckus only really eats once anyways and I think hes got some good meat on his bones.

One other quick question. I asked this in another post, but It didnt get answerd.

In some of the dog/cat foods they have a type of grain (Rice,Barley, ect) Is this okay for the BTS's. I do know where to get some that doesnt have any, but Im just currious.

Yeah, some rice / barley is fine. I wouldn't feed a food that has a huge amount of it in there, as it is a pretty cheap filler, but lots of people do feed cheaper dog foods with no problems. I try to buy the foods with as little as possible, but feeding some grains won't be a problem at all. :D

Thats good news. Thanks. The ones Ive been looking at have the grains in like the middle of the list or lower. So I think theyll be okay.
Thanks again Katrina
