Hello(Finally)!

Postby WanderingChai » Sat May 21, 2011 6:34 pm

Hello all! I'm Tia. I own Tea Cup(or, rather, she owns me). The picture below is her when we first got her. She's three inches larger now! :D

Image

Tea Cup is amazing. She has a mouth deformity, and can't open her mouth all the way. She is getting better and better at working with it everyday though! She's really tiny. 10 inches at 1 year 1 month(about). I am so anxious for her to get bigger.
I have some questions. Her nails need to be trimmed pretty bad, but she just won't stay still and its almost impossible to cut nails that are about two centimeters long! Also, this isn't quite as urgent, but she doesn't really like me. Because of her mouth, she can't bite me, but she tries. :noknow:

Thank you for reading this!

Welcome! Very interesting and adorable skink you have there :) It's great to hear she can eat and is growing. I love her name too.

In regards to nail-clipping, you can try trimming before the lights come on, that way she's cool and can't put up as much of a fight. You can also add rough stones/tiles/flooring to her tank, or take her outside on something, to wear down her nails naturally. I like the natural method, but when I trim I just barely remove the tip usually. If you do trim and there's a bit of bleeding, don't panic, just keep it clean until the bleeding has stopped (as in don't put her back into the tank where dust/dirt could get into the spot).

Getting her to like you generally takes time and patience. You can consider finding things she likes and getting her to associate those with being with you. For example, if she likes fruits, consider taking her out and giving her fruits (there are mixed feelings about hand-feeding, so up to you). Once the skinks realize you're safe, and associate you with food/treats/explore-time, they generally calm down and even look forward to coming out. They also naturally calm down as they grow bigger.

Thank you so much!!

I followed your advice and took her outside today. Her back feet wore down a bunch! I'm going to take her out even more tomorrow.

Okay. I'll try and do that(she loves strawberries)! She does really enjoy being out of her tank and wandering around in my room, just not the 'handling" part of it. :P
