Getting fat?

Postby Kat92 » Sun Apr 17, 2011 8:52 pm

Hey,
I'm new here :)
I got my bluey Charlie a few months ago from a pet store. He was underweight, and i know his diet there wasn't exactly ideal. Since getting him I've been giving him all the food he wants, my general diet mix being:
- all natural canned cat food (turkey and chicken) which has some fruit/veggies mixed in (carrots, broccoli, sweet potato, blueberries, cranberries) as well as a lot of supplements (he's not a fan of just meat)
- lots of collard greens
- all natural fruit applesauce (to give it a fruity flavour)
- a bit of repashy diet
- and fruit on top (I change it up, sometimes blueberries, grapes, pear, etc)
- and just a bit of calcium powder mixed in about once a week
I tried to track down butterworms/silkworms, but couldn't find any. I finally found some, but he turned his nose up at them.
I've been trying to get him to gain weight for the last month or so, when I go home at the end of the month I'll have a fecal sent away to test for parasites.
Does anyone have any suggestions to get him to eat some worms? or what foods are best to help him gain weight?
Thanks everyone!
~Kat

Plain dog food and F/T rats? I'm not a big fan of fruits in my diets (except as a treat). When I want to fatten up my skinks I give a diet of more meats, when I want to slim them down or maintain them, I do meat and veggies/greens.

Hi and welcome Kat! Love the name.

First off, are you sure he needs to gain weight? Some blueys don't carry a lot of weight - males especially can be slim and it isn't unhealthy. If the fecal sample comes back clean, and he is eating the diet you mentioned then I wouldn't worry about it - just keep feeding him healthy foods every few days and he should be fine (this is, of course, assuming there are not other health concerns).

Cat/dog food is a good choice for weight gain. Some blueys won't eat live food, but dew worms/nigthcrawlers and cockroaches are other good options for live foods if you want to try them. Beef and chicken as treats are also readily accepted. But regular, healthy meals should be all he needs to be a healthy weight. :D

Good luck! I'd love to see pictures!

Thanks guys
I did feel he needed to gain weight, mainly because his hip bones were very visible, and it was clear that his tail was a lot smaller than his body (basically no fat in his tail) which I have read happens in some males, but I increased the protein, and he seems to be happily filling out and growing like a weed haha.
As per the fruit, he doesn't seem to like food that doesn't smell like fruit. I normally just put a bit of fruit applesauce in with his cat food and greens, or a bit of repashy diet to help make it smell a bit fruitier.
As for the live prey, ya, I've given up on that ahaha. But after feeding some of my baby corn snakes, I had a leftover pinky mouse, and figured i'd give it a shot, see if he would eat it, and he scarfed it haha. so I guess that this might become his fat gaining treat. He's doing great now, I'm quite happy with his weight gain. I'll still be sending away a fecal once I get back to my regular vet, I was just worried because his hips just kept looking prominent, but that's gone now *yay*
Thanks for the help :)
And thanks for the welcome, I have to admit, already hooked on blueys :P
