Strange deposits on eyes

Postby ExtremeJustin » Thu Mar 31, 2011 11:08 pm

These mucus-like deposits keep appearing and disappearing from Thor's eyes. I read the care sheet and the link in the care sheet about eye problems but I really am not sure if what I am seeing matches any of the things on there. I noticed it shortly after she got some substrate stuck on her eye (I'm using Carefresh). I've also noticed dry bottom scales so I was planning to change to cypress (but haven't done so yet). I am probably just going to end up making a vet trip (this would be the first one for her ever believe it or not) once I find a good herp vet in the area that know Blue Tongues. I keep trying to get a picture of it but when she blinks her eyes it is gone. Has anyone had anything like this happen before? Maybe I missed something in the caresheet or maybe it's just something simple that I'm missing...

I can't tell what you're describing from the picture, but if she blinks and it is gone are you sure it is really a concern? The eye looks normal from the picture...

Yes. Happens to Joey all the time. Not every time he blinks, but every time he blinks "deeply" or "hard"...I really don't know what else to call it.
He has eye problems galore. And they itch. So when he's closing his eye hard to relieve the irritation it can get a "bulge" like I see in the picture. Or when he puts his eye on the ground to rub it on the towel the other eye will totally bulge out in what looks like blisters or something. But as soon as he's done, everything "goes back in" and looks normal.
It's funky I know! Freaks my daughter out.
I wish I could tell you what it is, or why it's happening, or what to do about it.
Just beware of anything irritated or red. Or him starting to rub it on stuff. I've had to remove everything from joey's cage except a smooth glass water bowl and towels to burrow in, because he rubbed his eyelids OFF of one eye. Not pretty, but it's hanging on, thank goodness.

Thank you both for the replies :) I actually read them yesterday but it was such a busy day that I didn't get a chance to reply. It doesn't look like it will require a trip to the vet then. I'm probably going to go ahead with the cypress mulch switch soon. If there aren't problems I'll keep that going. If there is a problem I'll switch to paper towels. She'll probably use paper towels to hid under lol. She used to love to hide under newspaper (she was using a bark substrate at the time...the newspaper was at the bottom under the substrate but she would always dig it out and use it to hide under) but I read in the caresheet how the print can get on their feet so I haven't used that in a year or so. Susann, hopefully Joey's eye issues don't become too much of a problem.
