so black has grown a few inches and i was wondering if you guys were now able to tell what kind of blue tongue skink. also would making a humidity box be a smart move?

Halmahera Indonesian.

High humidity is best for Indonesian types. I would say either keep the tank humid or provide the humidity box (or both).

Halmahera Indonesians are a locality of typical Indonesians. They're Indos collected from the Halmahera Island. They seem to be somewhat stockier and shorter than a typical Indo, with broad dark bands and distinct black facial markings (war-paint). They have, in the past year, become quite common as the Halmahera Island is being collected from. They are currently all Wild Caught or at the best Captive Born (gravid mother was wild caught and gave birth). For care, probably treat them like any other Indonesian. Also, since they`re WC, you should get a fecal check done if you haven`t already.

What a sweetie. I have a humid hide at all times, two water bowls and I mist the cage daily (twice in the winter) with coco fiber substrate. My advice would be never below 40% humidity and never below 70F at night.

Do IJs also need humidity? I've been meaning to get a bigger water dish for my IJ but haven't gotten around to it, but also want to make sure if I should take humidity into account.

humid hides never hurt anyone. IJ's also like higher humidity than the Australian species.

Oh yeah. Ij's definately need the same humidity that Indo's and Merauke's get. They are all gigas and live in the tropical climates of New Guinea and neighboring islands like Halmahera just a little to the north. I use big water bowls for both of my skinks. It keeps the humidity above 40% without getting too crazy on the misting. Most people including myself use cypress mulch for the substrate. I try to keep my humidity between 40-65% all the time. Sphagnum moss is another great way to keep it up. Just wet it and place underneath your skinks hide on the cool end.

Does cypress mulch tend to be dusty at all? My skink's viv is in my bedroom and I'm allergic to dust, so that wouldn't go well if the substrate was dusty! And what kind of containers do people usually use as humid hides?

Any tupperware would work for a humid hide. Just make sure its big enough so he/she can turn and move around in. Just get some damp paper towels to put on the bottom and you're good to go. You can also get sphagnum moss at any pet store in the reptile section and throw some of that in the tupperware. You do have to keep the hide clean. You should clean it every day to prevent nasty things growing inside it. You can reuse sphagnum moss for about 2 weeks. Cypress mulch is nice and damp at first but after about 2-4 weeks it gets a little dusty. You can either change the substrate when it gets like that or lightly mist everyday on the cool side to not let it get too dusty. I have allergies too and they do act up some what when I keep my tanks in my room. Luckily I have a room designated for my pets. Give cypress a shot and see how it works with you. Another good substrate is coco husk. You can buy bulk bags at lllreptile.com or check out an exotic reptile shop that is close to you. Reptibark is o.k. to use to. You can mist it a bit and it wont mold. Just dont mist it too much. Probably one a day should be fine. Just don't mist again till the water completely dries.

I measured the humidity in the viv and it says 50%.. is that sufficient? I will put a humid hide in there anyways though. If I have a humid hide, do I need to have a larger water dish? I think I'd run out of space at the cool end if I needed all that, lol!

Leave it at 50% and if he starts to have shedding issues (i.e. trouble shedding the toes or tip of the tail) then look at ways to increase it. If he sheds fine at that humidity, then it should be fine.
