Rescued Blue Tongue after Butcher Bird Attack!

Uly I completely understand and agree with the way you treat animals. If anything I feel more for animals than a lot of humans as horrible as that sounds :/
When I had to take my little baby blue tongue to the emergency vet, not only did other people in there think I was crazy for spending $700 just to be sure to keep him alive over night so he could see the proper herp vet, but they also all looked at me as if I was a weirdo because I was balling my eyes out over this poor little skink and snuffling and blowing my nose (quite embarrassing) people need to be more affectionate towards animals. I have a lot of respect for you after looking out for that little guy as best you could.

I feel the same way about most humans...that being said I am stupid enough to put my self in harms way to help a human out too. But I would have to judge each situation separately. I wish there were more people in the world who would spend a lot of money on an animals like you did :-) As for the people who thought you were a weirdo then that is a reflection on them not on you. It's not embarrassing to cry over an animal...to me it shows a great amount of compassion and strength.Is that your baby blue tongue in the photo above your name in your posts?

Guys..As far as getting a pet Blue tongue in the future...It's not something I want to think about now. That may or may not change in the future. The best out come would be for the blue tongue to fully heal and to be released back in to my back yard. If the vet says he is blind then I will take care of him for the rest of his life. If the vet feels he would be better off with a qualified Blue Tongue carer for the rest of it's life then that's the next best outcome. If they think the best thing is to put him to sleep then I will have to live with that.

My back yard seems so lifeless now without the blue tongue there The butcher bird is still hunting in my yard

Well done,exotic vets are great for injured wildlife,if it heals from wounds it will very likely come back to you,if deemed ok

Uly, yes thats my little baby Crowley trying to get some sleep on his blanket on me but I annoyingly snap some photos of him They are truly lovely pets.
My whole family are like that with animals,they are part of the family and should be treated that way. I was lucky to find the money up for my poor little Crowley, nearly had to sell my tv really cheap but I thankfully have animal loving family that helped pitch in
You wouldnt regret getting yourself a bluey as a pet. You will probably become addicted like I am with mine!

Richard...Thanks for that info. I doubt he would have been looked at today if it was for your suggestion to look for an exotic / reptile vet! :-)

Rani... Crowley is a cool name and he is very cute too :-) Yeah I grew up in an animal loving family too. I can't even count the number of animals we have had over the years. My Dog Chief was like a brother to me...I miss him heaps! Yeah I could definitely see myself getting addicted to bluey's lol :-)

Uly, I grew up with so many animals also, I think its important for a family, or at least kids to have pets, teaches them a lot.
And thank you, I like using very different or uncommon names for pets Crowley is a Tasmanian Blotched blue tongue.

Ive seen quite a few wild ones myself, I live just near some forestry, but unfortunately it is being destroyed so I doubt ill see any this summer otherwise I wouldve loved finding some and snapping a few photos for you. They are beautiful down here, very dark but rich colours. I might make a new topic post and include a few pictures of crowley and his/her sibling to show their colours.majority down here have the same deep and dark beautiful colours with lighter bellies.

There's another Blue Tongue in my yard!!!!

This one looks bigger than the other one. The butcher Bird was attacking it too!! I ran out there and scared the butcher bird away! This Blue Tongue was hiding better than the other one. I got some great Pics and Video footage of it. Will post them later.

Anyone got any ideas on how to keep the butcher bird away? Just been using the hose and full stream water near him to scare him away. I really don't want to take anther Blue tongue to the vet!!

You could buy fake cats or owls staked sign thingies, if you know what im talking about. But you would have to move them around every few days or so to keep the birds away for good.
Or if you are really desperate, you can get sonic repellers, or ultra sonic ones, but I dont know how much they cost.

Well I went out side! The butcher bird was at the Blue Tongue again! The Blue Tongue went in to the next door neighbours yard! He came back into my yard. and I guided him with my rake back under the Gas cylinders where he lives! The Blue Tongue now has fresh blood below his eye but further down not in the eye!! It looks like a flesh wound!!

Why the hell is this happening!! This has never happened before! What the hell am I supposed to do!! This blue tongue will be blind or dead within a few days too!

Nope. Guns are Illegal here and and killing native birds is against the law. I have to admit there's a part of me that want to euthanasia this Butcher bird! If this Blue tongue is killed then that's the whole population of Blue tongues gone from yard!

Mother nature i guess,i bet theres other blueys about to,easterns move around a bit,plus have big litters,where theres one or 2 theres usually alot more,even in suburbia

I was thinking air rifle,lol,but they are native birds so shouldnt do that,something that may help is setting a trap for the bird,if u trap it,it might scare it enough to bugger off elsewhere,but u may find like blueys when one goes more usually come replace them and cycle continues,blueys are usually good at staying out of the open,suprises me 2 of them are copping this,but if bird has sussed them out as easy targets its probably clued on to hunting them

Well If there are other Blueys in my yard or my neighbours yard then the Blueys are Dead Lizards walking because this butcher bird knows where both my lizards sleep and the bird is constantly on my fence or low branches of my tree scouting for Blueys. No matter what I do to scare it away it comes back 5 mins later! I can't spend the rest of the summer running out side every 5 mins chasing that bird away! It's only the one bird! I have magpies in my yard and they don't bother the Lizards.

Exactly Richard...These 2 Blueys have been in my yard for more than 6 years (My sister says at least 10 years) and I have never had them attacked before. The Butcher bird has been around for around 3 years. Why now and the Blueys don't seem to be moving when they are attacked. Have they just become complacent because they haven't been attacked before??

I am wondering if maybe relocating this bluey to my sisters yard would be an option? She has a big yard and has other Blueys and a Bearded dragon in her yard. She has no Butcher birds or other birds that have attacked her lizards. If this is an option then if the Vet says the other Bluey could be released in my sisters yard too?

The other thing I could do is to train the Bluey to run and hide when it see's me and maybe it will become better at escaping from the Butcher bird?

The Cage option you mentioned could work too??

Can you guys tell from the Video if that is a male or Female? I knew the Bluey slept in the old pipes under my back stairs and behind my Gas Cylinders. I suspected I had 2 Blueys but couldn't prove it. Now I know...The one at the vet sleeps in the old pipes and the one from today sleep behind the Gas cylinders!

Eing thats springs just starting,blueys can be pretty sluggish,especially early in the day,so escape reflexes lower ect,ive seen magpies going at a large eastern before,but he was striking back and displaying so got away unscathed when i had a closer look,magies flew off when i got close

Something i thought of being spring now,is could the butcher bird be nesting close by,its common for birds to get protective of nesting area,they even swoop and try to warn off 2 metre long lacies

U can relocate,but then u have a bluey in other blueys territories,and if sis lives a decent distance away you mess with the local gene pool,ideally they should be returned where they are familiar,is it possable to make more cover around the yard for them to get protection

You need a permit to relocate a blue tongue, just to let you know. Mostly for reasons Richard pointed out, but also to limit spread of disease etc.
It's nature, sad as it is. You can't save them all, or you end up messing with the ecosystem!

With that theory we should should stop saving stranded dolphins, Let poachers kill endangered wildlife.

Why have wild life rescue if it's sad and just Nature??

So I'll just let them be ripped apart by the butcher bird and do nothing!
