kimberley northern 2013 season has begun

northerns are interesting to watch in the lead up,they wont mate until they swell up enough to see a distinct swelling of hemipenes looks like they are about to poop a marble,its only then that they will make a female lift her tail,they rub there vent area trying to get to that point even using both back feet to get there

sometimes i wish they would get there faster for the females sake

Are you saying other species don't have the build up time? I thought that was standard, but then I haven't paid a ton of attention to it, just noticed in it passing. I'm pretty sure my tanimbars also have the build up (the two times I've actually had them mate).

Build up time to me: male grabs, takes forever to drag her around and get into position, and then for a while they both just sit perfectly still while the lad gets ready, until finally it's time for the action. I think I described it to my siblings as the boys having the prime the cannons before firing.

Observing the mating is definitely interesting. I personally love all the body language that gets used. But I assumed mating would be the same for all the species, it's very interesting to think the other species act a bit differently.

with blotchies and shingle backs ive never seen them shake bejesus out of females for five to ten mins before the hold before mating,they chase female,secure her,sometimes hold and rest then mate,but often its get a good hold then get straight into it,and ive seen them repeat it 4 or 5 times in like 3 hours,northerns just seem to go so gungho that they wear them selves out for a few hours,lol

easterns ive never seen show that intensity but could happen,tannies being related could be similar to or my lot may just be filled with testosterone,lol

Introduced a pair of first timers ( Easterns), and they hit it off just like the Northerns .




Also , had a Kimberley tonight that needed a white cane, he had trouble 'scoring a goal'.







By the looks of things, she still rocked his world though.

This is the first season that I have kept easterns separately coming into breeding season. I have always just run them outside in a pit, all together. But the downside is how bashed up the girls become.

This young male was just as violent as any northern. That particular female was pretty bitey as well. I was surprised the male wasn't put off his game.

interesting,perhaps blotchies dominating my outdoors cage mellows them,i rarely even see bite marks on them,some of the blotchies get a bit beat uo though,but ive seen 5 males trying to get one female before ,got a pic of two hanging off the big female,ones actually doing the deed the other was trying on the other side

one of my northern girls is very fiesty,if not ready yet she persues even my largest male,last season she was biting the male back but it made him more determined

Are you finding any of your girls flat out refusing the males after already 'enjoying' mating in the previous days/weeks?

I've had a couple of mine after 2 or 3 matings with the same male become very nasty, to the point where the male gets gun shy. I haven't seen this behavior in previous seasons, but this year I have started putting pairs together a month or so earlier than previous.

not so far this season rory,these young males are kept warmer than the big ones,as there still in grow up cages ,last season i had that happen with the big male though,some days he just wasnt interested,a few times fiesty lass actually went up to him and gently bit at his head neck area and he eventually woke up and did the deed,but alot of the time he just wasnt keen

i dont give the big ones night heat and july temps here are pretty woeful,was cooler than normal which shut the boys down a bit,probably why they bred over a 6 week window

i found pairing later in the day and allowing male to bask to warm up helped,but some days he just didnt want to,but a couple of times the day off made him super keen the next day or 2,a couple of times he latched on before i even placed the female on the ground,lol

id say its a temp thing,and watch your fingers when the boys are readu again,lol

pencil in a 13 th mating in eleven days for young kunnanurra male and prince regent female,today he was slow to start,bit back of her head first,so i got him off,then he grabbed right spot and just held her till he was ready,one little shake and thank your mother for the rabbits,very gentle again

i filmed it so no pics,its uploading to you tube so eill take a bit to be done but its title os

2nd pr have had the day off,no aggression,the male would check her out and wriggle tail at her,the cruise away

3rd pr still no dice,lack lustre interest but hes only grabbed at her the once when second pr started,i tried her with younger males,one ignored her,the other arched his back at her in defence and warning nipped at her,im guessing not ready yet,the male that resides with her,big wild caught fella chases her and today has been grabbing her but thats it for her,so im guessing those 3 just need more time

last 2 days ive put big kunnanurras in with the young male,he gets defensive then trys to nip them aggrrssively,they respond by raising there tail base,i tried him with prince regent lass again this evening,he was calmer with her but still did the nipping thing,even arching his back towards them like he was about to challenge another male,the prince regrnt lass got frustrated and also did the tail base raise,they all just sat there with tail base raised,prince regent lass snd also kunnanurra lass that have been getting mated appear to have thickened up making me wonder if ovulation has kicked in,but will continue intros and see what happens

just seems a very odd change in behaviour,today was abit warmer in the shed,noticed last years hold backs thermostat was shutting lights off a bit,havnt seen that for quite some time

Yeah, must of just been the weather that day.
Most of my boys have exclusive mating rights to about 4 females each. If one female won't allow any action, I give the boy an hours spell or so and chuck him in with the next in the harem. If the second cab off the rank refuses .... He gets a night off.
Giving the boys about 24 hours between successful "sessions".

I have one male though that never takes no for an answer

No Kimberleys mated at my place tonight. Remember when I put this pic up of a female I acquired from a mate earlier this year?




Well the 2 boys of the same locale she came with have showed zero interest...they look like they are still getting over last seasons mating brutality. So I tried her with some of my other proven male kimberleys........She quickly nailed the first male , nearly took his head off in a death roll. So I quickly whipped him out and tried another who is a little bigger and rougher. Straight away he grabbed her mid body, but she bit back just as quick. Somehow she ended up with a death grip on his lower jaw. He tried to clamp down on her head with the top jaw but she had the more painful hold......never seen a bluey bleed so profusely. So , that's it with her, I'm not burning out any more males on her. My mate did warn me she was nasty though after I rang him and he stopped laughing ,he started to give me the sordid history of males she has dismembered over the years.....now he tells me.

Anyway all was not lost , got a few other pairs of northerns to open their account for the season.

haha,its amazing the speed and power they put into death rolling one another

some females are really narky,perhaps shes a feminist,lol

rory broome phaseds are kimberleys ,so that counts,lol

like that yellow eastern,you certainly have a nice array of scincoides varieties

my big male kunnanurra started having a bit of a go at the 3rd female today,hopefully he kicks into gear tomoz,hes been real lazy so far
