Lol, poor Zach
!
I was going to say more Danny, but if they are selling them for like $600 like the one that was in the Melbourne pet shop then it would be around 4 pairs. That's why I added atleast in to it.

Yes TQ, alpines do vary lots. I have probably seen over 200 in the wild from the alpine areas in Victoria right up to south of Canberra, and they are real different. And the thing is, they are also varying in the same localilty. For eg, I saw the best alpine I have even seen near Thredbo this summer, then 20 metres down the road (the Alpine Way that is), was another, and boy, it would have to be the worst I have ever seen!!!!! As Edward said, they cannot be a distinct species. I would describe them as a phenotypic variation. I am also of the opinion, although I havent proven it yet, that in some populations, altitude may be a factor in phenotype. I will let you know in a year or two, but I have started collecting data on a population east of Cooma on the Great Dividing Range, where initial data suggests that this may be the case (or a fluke at the very least!!!).

Hehe...one job we do in western NSW in around October, you will see about 50 shinglebacks a day!!!!
Then I go into the snowy mountains in January and at one site see about 20 alpines a day.
IN between there are lots of things to head out on if you are keen to see reptiles in the wild and help out on research projects.
Just let me know if you are keen and send me you details and I will keep you posted. You just have to get yourself to Wagga (train is about $30 I think), then all food and accomadation is provided.
