Re: Thor showing interest in females!

My males generally have a week of limited interest where they will mate most days if I leave them long enough. Then about 2 weeks where they attack the females within 2 seconds of being introduced. After that, They will still breed for a week or two, but it is more hesitant like the first week. There is always enough time to put each male with 3 different females at leat 5-6 times. The trick is figuring out which females are ready first. Fortunately, they aren't all ready at the same time, so the males can take care of the ones that are ready first, and then still be going when the later females get into the mood.

Thanks Jeff & Richard!
I have a question about the females readiness; I have been assuming they are ready if they allow the male to mate, even though they are struggling. My older female especially could easily overpower Thor if she really wanted to. Do you ever see your females comply with no struggle?

Yep. When a female is in the heart of her breeding window, she will frequently not struggle at all. Sometimes it's just kind of a slow walk while the male is getting into position.

That's how you can tell where the females are in their window. They fight less and less until not at all, then more and more until they are done. They are individuals though. A couple of my females pretty much always struggle some, and others rarely struggle much at all.

Ok- Thor is definitely much more interested today- went for Calypso within 1 min. and did not give up til he had accomplished his task. Calypso was struggling and trying to get away-Thor had to re- approach and grab hold several times before he subdued her enough. From looking over my notes from last season- Calypso was never cooperative, she was either struggling and trying to escape- or all out trying to attack him (that was when we were done!) She did have a very long gestation- so maybe she wasn't ovulating til a month or so after?

Sounds like what most of my females do,make the male do some work, though the males seem to stuff around abit to get in position and evert,my foestiest female sometimes actually goes to the male and gently nips at him to get him in the mood waving her tail in his face ect to,usually cooler days when he prefers to just sit and bask

Any other time of year and fiesty lass actually chases him around his cage, lol

What your describing sounds typical of what mine do

Ok we are done! I have gotten 4 copulation's between Thor and each female (Calypso & Ember) 4 got it done last year with Calypso so that's what my goal was for this year as well. Both of the females were struggling more as well, and getting really scrapped up on the sides so I felt it was time to give them a rest. Now the waiting game begins- so hoping I don't have quite the long wait of last year (133 days), but at least I feel more prepared for what is to come. I want to wish everyone else who is breeding this season a very fruitful year! Can't wait to see all those new baby pics :ohyes:
