Re: sexing no-no, or is it ok?
Agree to disagree then. In my opinion it was started out wrong whb he made it seem like it was a way for everyone to have a whack at, at home to see if thei skink is male or female when it is unnecessary for then to have to know. He did not have to mention it I the post asking howto tell if your own skink is male or female. He even explained how to do it in the post prior showing it in person in the meeting. I just found it an inappropriate time. Kids don't like waiting an entire month for a meeting to do something they want to know now. And icing explained on the wall like that I reckon they gather it was an invitation to try it

Maybe they thought better to show the technique rather than impatient folk trying for them selves first, has he done the demo yet?

no he didnt say to be gentle on the wall post. the meeting was a couple days ago which i did not gt to attend. but it was on the wall over a week before the meeting.
i dont think you understood what happened. it was posted about on a facebook wall then he said something along the lines of maybe showing how to do it at the meeting. so he did not show the technique first at all. :/

either way its done with now, and they even put pictures up on the facebook wall showing kids putting their blueys on their shoulders without holding them there, just have them plonked on their shoulder without support. i dont see the point in saying anything about that either or ill end up being the naggy blue tongue lady that picks at everything lol

Re: sexing no-no, or is it ok?
lol sorry, ok someone asked on their facebook wall asking how to determine male or female. and he said and popping the hemiphenes out and explained how it was done, this was all posted on the internet, not being shown. after saying that he then said along the lines of "i might demonstrate and discuss it at the next meeting" so he explained how to do it to people and kids without showing how first. he did say its difficult and experienced people would only be able to do it. but did not say to be gentle or not to try it without being shown. this was all said over a week BEFORE the meeting he said he MIGHT show it at.
im not even sure if he ended up showing it at the meeting as unfortunately i couldnt attend.but i just dont think he should have mentioned it until he was able to at least show it properly in person and explain the possible dangers of doing it simply to find out just the sex of your bluey.

Re: sexing no-no, or is it ok?
well he did mention it should only be performed by experienced people, its difficult and only experienced people would be able to do it,and that he might show it at the meeting
i dont think theres to much harm explaining the method,kids/inexperienced are likely to look elsewhere online for that info anyhow, its often mentioned in books to,you would hope people would be smart enough not to attempt it if they dont know what they are doing , but unfortunatly some will try regardless, even knowing the risks involved
there are times when knowing the sex is good thathasnothing to do with breeding,eg housing more than one together,if its multiple males therecould be issues, communal housing is quite common with blotchies in australia

Because things can be done it doesn't always mean they should.
There are 10 kinds of people in the world; those who understand binary and those who do not.

Re: sexing no-no, or is it ok?
thats fair enough and all but i would have thought people would pay more attention to their blueys behaviours to tell them those kinda things. People around here are pretty naive when it comes to their reptiles. because anyone can go out and get one they do without researching and knowing much about them. for instance someone in the group got given a dragon, he took it without even having the uvs bought and set up. and he was asking to get a dragon long before he had even found a tank or other supplies and his reasoning was that he had advertised to get supplies... um, no... you get supplies before you get the animal. the way things are done around here just tickles* me off sometimes

I'm not sure that this topic has much more to give, I think everyone has had their say. I don't want it to degrade and think that it would be better to start a new thread if you want to take up a related topic - thanks all for your input :-)
