What substrate are you all using? :D

I'm on the lookout for a large, cheap amount of bark/mulch substrate to try. I've tried most substrates and while I like aspen it tends to be pretty dry and gets everywhere. So I'm debating between carpet (not the ones that catch toes) or mulch (if I could ever find some). For breeding season my guys are on newspaper.

I personally don't like carefresh because not only is it dryer than aspen it's made of lots of tiny fibers. The fibers can (on rare occasion) catch on skink-toes, constrict and cause toe-loss. In scientific studies it happened in about 1-in-200 mice (no, I don't have the link anymore, bugger off). Anyways, Trikks the Tanimbar was my unlucky victim (all the skinks were on it, only he was affected) and lost 1 toe and had another permanently damaged. The vet was able to find and remove the fiber to save the toe (it's perma-swollen). I stopped using carefresh after that.
