They are definitely sneaky little guys. A friend of mine has them, and between the two of us, we've lost ours a time or two. Fortunately, they can't climb up so you only need to search knee level down. But that still leaves a LOT of space for them to play in. And just because you looked there yesterday, doesn't mean they won't be there today (as you found out). For future reference, here are some things we've done:
piled clothes along the edge of the walls for them to bury down in
used the flour trick, but put it on wax paper so it was easier to pick up and we could see the trails better
turned off the radios and tvs and went along with a pointer and tapped at things (this seems to irritate them when they are sleeping and tend to start huffing)
Put table lamps on the floor and kept them on (with floured paper under them for evidence that they may have stopped by)
We have found them:
under the wood burning stove on the fire place bricks (fortunately it wasn't burning at the time - he wanted the cold to sleep)
under a drawer in the kitchen next to the stove
behind boxes in the storage closet
in the bathroom under the sink
wedged in between the washer and dryer
in the lower lining of the recliner
in a plastic bag of the dog's stuffed animals
We even lost one in the habitat outside. After totally disassembling it and removing all of the hides and most of the cypress bedding on the floor, we found him in a partial bag of mulch we hadn't dumped yet.
They steal our hearts, don't they. I'm so glad you found him. It happens to the best of us.

Ufortunately this is not true. They ARE sneaky little guys, but unless they've lost all of their fingers/nails (and I still wouldn't trust them), they very much CAN, and DO, climb.

Climbing isn't about grip, it's all about leverage. A skink can pretty much stand on it's tail when climbing a wall, can climb fake plants and rocks with ease regardless of physical imparement, and can even scale a vertical wall if there's something to press back against.
That last bit is literal. I've had skinks climb over 2 feet up a room wall because the bathroom cabinet is only an inch or so away and they can arch their back and press against both at the same time, thus giving them the ability to scale the wall.
If there is a way out, a reptile will find it. And once learned, they will remember it.

haha thanks~ It's been there a while, but I haven't been active much.
As for climbing, the lazy skinks will go vertical if they really want to in order to nudge open a screen top. Them being lazy is all a ruse. They're just waiting for you to slip up so they can go explore for noms.

Yeah, I guess I learned that they can actually climb pretty well the hard way. I was glad that he was so close to his tank. It would've been hell if he wandered out of the room. That's exactly something I'd expect him to do though -- find a dark place nearby and curl up there.
I have put a canopy over his tank and he hasn't escaped since (... or yet?), LOL! Unfortunately it doesn't lock but it is pretty heavy and hopefully some weights will help keep it down too.
The most surprising part is how tiny their little limbs are, yet they're sure able to get wherever they want to get when they really want to get there.
