I say its possible, any animal has the potential to adapt to a situation, which is in essence learning. If that was gone from their mentality, then they would simply die off and go extinct; so I think every animal can 'learn' what gets them the best off.
For a skink, their best off is filling their bellies, and its plausible that they can figure out that they get their bellies filled by following a target.
Push comes to shove, its no harm no foul; you get to interact with your critter and your critter gets to be out and about. So even if it doesn't work as planned, it has a benefit.
