Adult skink with red underbelly

Postby Willie19056 » Sun Nov 04, 2012 10:20 am

Hello all, I was changing out the bedding in Gus's tank and noticed his under belly is red, almost like a rash, I've never noticed it before, is this common to the skink? Could he have burned his belly on his basking rock? I'm still new to this type of reptile so I apologize if this is a ridiculous question... :helpme:

can you post a picture? some skinks (meraukes) have pink/red stomachs naturally...

Definitely post pictures.
a beautiful red belly is always worth seeing, if its his natural red belly.

if he has an electric basking rock, throw it out. if you worry about him burning himself on a regular basking rock, get a heatgun and check the surface temperature mid day. its always great to have one anyway :)

Welcome to the forum! It's perfectly normal for some gigas to have red bellies. Even some Australian skinks will get pink/red bellies before shedding. A picture would be helpful to verify, but most likely, you have nothing to worry about.

After further investigation, I have noticed some patches of his body where he has shed, and after reading some of the post, I'm thinking this is why he has the red belly, I have tossed the plug in heat rock and replaced it with a nice piece of slate and a larger basking light, I currently have him in a 55 gallon tank, it is a fish tank, but I have to use what I have until I can buy a more suitable home for him, I also purchased a nocturnal inferred light for him for overnight temp drops,Once I figure how to post photos with my iPad, I will certainly share! Thanks for your help everyone!

Sounds like he'll have a great home with you!

my new skink is getting red underneath. I have read its normal due to possible shedding but I have also read that it could be signs of infection. This is the best 2 pictures I could get of under belly.

He has a slate stone he lays on from time to time that is under a heat lamp. the stone has been on average between 85 and 94 degrees according to temp laser.

Many skinks have red underbellies. It is a natural occurrence.
