New to owning skink and worried

Postby Darkgoddess » Fri Mar 04, 2022 8:09 am

So i have a blue tongue lizard/skink female(i think) and shes been acting little weird since this morning, i have only had her for a week and im not sure if shes eating yet (though i cant find the cricket i put in her cage) im guessing shes a adult though im not sure the pet shop i got her from dident know her age or gender.
The things im confused/worried about are
-climbing the glass till she falls over
-digging at the sand
-when i tried to dig up some sand in her cage today as it looked compacted she hissed at me for the first time and looked like she wanted to bite me
-trying to burrow into me, so for the week i had her she usually sat on my sholder or tried to climb on my head, but today she was going everywhere tongue flicking out whole time and then she tried to burrow under my chin and arms

*Note she has more then just a cricket in her cage for food but the other food hasent been touched

More info please....is it a baby?
Pictures of your setup (I do not recommend sand)
Pics of your skink
I also do not recommend leaving crickets in the cage unless immobilized and placed
in a bowl.

Glass surfing and constantly digging in corners can mean either the tank is too small or there’s not enough coverage and enrichment or just stress from new environment.
I don’t recommend using pure sand for blue tongues, not because of impaction but it’s just not good for them to burrow into unless you mix it with another substrate like organic soil. If you want something cheap go to bunnings and get some euci mulch, one of the best and cheapest substrates you can get, I highly recommend. They also have a big selection of fake plant stems and vines you can use for decor and coverage. Also PVC pipes make excellent hides and tunnels.

Hissing while being disturbed is normal, biting or threatening to bite can be normal as well, seems to be common with Victorian easterns lol, since my vic eastern likes to bite too.
Burrowing into your arms or any other crease on your body is 100% normal because all of mine do that when I handle them.
