New black/swollen scales on top of head?

Postby ryleyb » Tue Jan 18, 2022 1:23 pm

Hello everyone. I have a merauke blue tongue skink which recently just shed a couple days ago, and for some reason he has these blackish/red kind of swollen looking scales or bumps on his head. His nose is also like that but he had issues with rubbing his nose constantly with his previous owner. I’m just wondering if anyone knows what it is and if I should be concerned. His basking temp is about 97 and his humidity stays at about 65-70. Thanks!

Those are stuck shed. You can use a little mineral oil to loosen the scales and then they should hopefully come right off. Make sure your humidity is high. You can also try a humid hide as well.

Okay, is there any reason it has some red spots that look irritated? I tried rubbing gently with my finger and it didn’t come off, and I had his humidity up towards 80% during his shed but I will try the mineral oil. Thank you very much!

Great on the humidity. The mineral oil should help loosen any stuck shed. Keep an eye on it and if it gets worse I would take to the vet.
