Is Jasper Too Fat?

Postby GlassWalker » Sun Dec 19, 2021 2:14 pm

Hey folks, so I've had Jasper for about a year now and he was a juvenile when I got him, and while he's way more moisture-averse than I expected from a Halmahera (though the pet store could've gotten his species wrong), he's been doing great. But my question is, is he doing a little too great? I feed him twice a week--meat and veggies on Tuesdays, just veggies on Fridays--and I'm wondering if he's at a healthy weight. When I see Youtubers with blueys, they have more of a snakelike appearance, while mine is more of a potato. Is he too fat or is he more...Los Angeles fat? I've included pics from multiple angles.

Hi GlassWalker,

That is a certaintly a robust skink! Beautiful colours 8) How much does he weigh? That can help to place him as photos can be a bit deceptive. If Jasper is a bit over a year old he probably has a fair bit of growth left in him - I know before my skink hit a year old he had some chunky phases before adding on some length in growth spurts - but generally always leaned towards slender (which made sense when he dropped plugs)

Can I ask if its a confirmed male/female? As a rule, for most BTS species (as far as I know) males are typically more svelte and streamlined in their proportions (don't ask why) whilst the females can get quite round and chunky.

Hi there. So some of your pictures your skink looks good and then a few it does look a little plump. When you feed how much are you feeding at a time? Perhaps scale back the amount your feeding by 10% or so. What is the weight?

Sex hasn't been confirmed. I only guessed male thanks to good old-fashioned patriarchal bias. If Jasper turns out to be female, I'll change their name to Empress (an obscure comic book character I like). He/she/they weigh about 2 pounds, but I only have a bathroom scale which is probably not ideal.

As for how much I feed, I haven't been measuring. Just as much food that fits in the jar lid I've been using as a feeding dish. Sometimes he cleans his plate, sometimes he doesn't.

Okay like I said cut back about 10% and see how it goes. Overall the weight isn't horrible.

Looks fine to me. Could be female as they are prone to have a bit more ovoid shaped bodies.
